Underrated serve returners

Seeing the Funky Flo match today, I had forgotten how good a returner he was. MTF is all over Nolerray, but there are many other good returners.

So I started to think about all those mugs/ second-tier players who have a great return of serve.

Oher than Mayer, I thought about Verdasco. He can really rip those returns! Of course h's just as error prone on the return as the rest of his game, but I think it's more a mental problem than a lack of technique.

And of course there's Giraldo! This video speaks for itself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBvesji9yOs

Can you think about other good underrated returners?

Proud supporter of El Tio , the greatest genius alive!

El Tio transforms Dull into a multiple GS champion! Daaaaamn!

El Tio has the keys to weather, court speed, draw making, umpires' decisions and perception of time between points, top players' fatherhood, and my libido!

This signature is in no way ironic. Please don't ever let El Tio think that, for my sake!

Denko and Nalbandian are well known for their return.

Melzer, Nishikori and especially Cilic are good choices though. One tends to forget how great a returner Cilic is because of his general muginess.

Re: Underrated serve returners

Peak Hewitt was as good returner as you would ever see. I don`t think he is given enough credit now, people have such a short memory.

Gasquet is next №1

Yup, Cilic is the best returner of serve I've seen at that height. Of course he's also arguably the worst server among giants and mentally... well let's not even go there, but his return is often overlooked.

Nishikori is a great returner, but too often he is too ambitious on 1st serves returns instead of just getting them back in play, which sometimes hurts him I feel. Melzer also an underrated returner, probably the best returner of serve among 'mugs' ie players outside the top 20.

Re: Underrated serve returners

Davydenko/Nalbandian and Hewitt have better returns than Ferrer/Djokovic and Murray ..... slow-asass-era + mug servers (only using kick serve) + mug weak field ... inflates their statistics by MUCH !

Without a doubt Nalbandian and Davydenko. And when Safin was around, him.

Re: Underrated serve returners

LOL. Giraldo was shitting himself against Guccione the other day. He goes for it on clay and does pretty well for himself but other than that his reflexes suck. Same goes for Almagro.

Underrated returners are Youzhny and Monaco. Youzhny fucking dismantled Isner in front of his home crowd one year at the US Open. It was freaking ruthless.
Simon is also worth a mention, especially on hardcourts.

I'd also add Bellucci here

Re: Underrated serve returners

Pick a player with a weakfish serve but decent ranking, and he's almost certainly a good returner. Top 25 generally need to be either good at both, or excellent at one.

The most interesting exception is Nadal, especially on hard courts.
