Unhappy Hitting flat on clay

Next week i'll play on a small tournament at a local club. Surface : clay . I hit the ball flat, hard enough to not seeing it back most of the times. On clay its' another story. Should i come to the net more? Everybody says clay is the worst surface to come to the net, but i feel i have to do it more on it. I'm not fitness guy
BTW, who was the last RG champion with few or zero topspin on his shots, Yevgeny, Andre?

Re: Hitting flat on clay

I'd say try to get into the net when you can, but wait for short balls that you can hit a nice approach on. You might hit a winner with a nice flat shot even on clay, but hopefully even if they get it back you'll be ready for an easy volley.

Kafelnikov in my opinion was the last guy with very little top on his shots, especially his backhand. Agassi can flatten it out nicely, but he often also uses a lot of topspin.

Re: Hitting flat on clay

I'd say keep to your original gameplan, but make odd ventures to the net. If your hitting hard, a lot of the time your opponent will probably chip the ball back and you should get an easy volley. but if you don't hit a good approach shot you're f*****d coz they've got too much time on the pass....

btw, i think this is the 1st ever serious post i've read by you

Re: Hitting flat on clay

Go with your strength...and definitely, don't be afraid to come to net but be prepared to see some lobs from balls you wouldn't normally expect to come back. And be prepared...if you've got a quick first step...it's gone on clay. Good Luck, AJ.

Get Al Falla to coach you for the week of the tournament, too. I heard he is not playing much due to the rehab.

Go Alfonso

Unfortunately I am a clay pigeon myself and have only played on it a select few times.

The best advice I can think of is choose the right moment to come in. Volleying can be effective on clay if it disturbs your opponent's rythm and you do it when they are pushed deep and/or off balance. However if you come too often it becomes predictable and you are basically just a sitting duck (pardon the pun ) for the passing shot.

Re: Hitting flat on clay

Haven't played much on it myself, but from what I've heard the general thinking is just plan on hitting "a lot" more balls and be sure to seize opportunities when they present themselves.

A tennis question from big Fonsie. This is scary

Actually you have to do the best you can with your particular style. Make sure you are ready to be moving from the first point. If you can't move well on clay, then that's a problem.

The only thing I can suggest is play your usual style, but maybe take the pace off the odd shot, try and not to give them too much rhythm. If you hit a good hard shot, and then he hits a high one with no speed, then move forward and make the volley. If you are going to volley make them count.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Re: Hitting flat on clay

I love the net at singles, but very tough on clay. Tough to split step and get your footing to go one way or the other. I split step and it just becomes one big slide when I land and I cannot move to one direction or another as quickly as I would like.

Re: Hitting flat on clay

you always have to stick to your strengths. but, because it's clay and you hit flat, you should try to be patient and develop your points instead of going for winners all of the time
