Hewitt vs. Murray Debate Thread

2 slams each, one Wimbledon and one US Open a piece.

Hewitts were straight sets beatdowns both times, Murrays was a beatdown and an epic that could have gone either way.

Murray has olympic gold medal, Hewitt has world number one ranking and is the youngest ever number one in history.

Both were probably cost slams by Federer and Nadal, Hewitt more by Fed and Murray by Nadal, though in many early rounds of RG Nadal cost Hewitt.

Hewitt has TMC titles, Murray is yet to reach the final of WTF event.

Both mugs on clay.

Hewitt had a short period of utter domination, Murray has had a longer steady more successful career. To each their own. Better to burn out and all.

Discuss.

Re: Has Murray eclipsed Hewitt yet?

It's probably even. As you said, Hewitt was stopped by Federer and Andy has been stopped from reaching more GS finals by Nadal.

Re: Has Murray eclipsed Hewitt yet?

murray's a lot better as he is still in his prime, and has many more years of success.

murray will be one of the fast court greats when his career is over, right up with federer, djokovic, pete and agassi.

and rightly so. he is lucky apart from djokovic, the competition is weak, he can run riot in the next few years

he has great chances in 3/4 slams every year. french open he has no chance.

Love 'ol Rusty but personally I put sustained success over 6 years and counting over a few short years of domination. Its very close though atm, if Murray can either rise to #1 for a little period or win the WTF then he'll definitely have gone straight above Rusty in my view.

BIG FAN of Milos Raonic. Most exciting player to ever pick up a racket.

Hewitt had as much sustained success from 2001-2005 as Andy has had from 2008-2013. Andy had his off year in 2009 and Hewitt had his off year in 2003.

Not this shit again.

We have previously discussed and debated this topic, and everybody eventually agreed I was correct. Murray is miles and miles ahead of Hewitt in every area.
LightsoutLuz likes this.

Re: Has Murray eclipsed Hewitt yet?

I always wonder what might have happened in 2009 had the other Andy not edged Hewitt out of Wimbledon.

Could that 2009 final have been Hewitts swansong? He wouldn't have choked away a 6-2 lead in 2nd set breaker. Oh well.

The only thing Andy has over Lleyton is height right now.

Re: Has Murray eclipsed Hewitt yet?

So far Hewitt >>>>> Murray (two masters cups, 2 year-end #1, end of discussion).

It's nearly certain that Murray >>>> Hewitt by the time Murray retires. But not now.

They've both got 28 career titles as well.

Like I said its very close atm, I expect the next 12 months to tip it definitively in Muzza's favour.

Re: Has Murray eclipsed Hewitt yet?

Well, talent wise, Murray is better than Heweitt, but Hewitt was #1 for a good while. Murray would have to win a 3rd slam first or at least get to #1 for a few weeks before eclipsing Hewitt.

Re: Has Murray eclipsed Hewitt yet?

Completely biased poll options by the way. Hewitt is not up "by a whisker", he's clearly ahead based on current achievements. As it's extremely probable that Murray will overtake him but I can't predict the future, i voted for the second option as the closest one to reality.
