It is just a casual cost he pays once in a while to be able to win more grandslams going forward.

I think he will come out relaxed at the US Open and surprise everyone with his tennis. Mind you he already won the only hardcourt tournament he played this year, Indian Wells.
He seemed surprisingly unaffected this year compared to last year where he looked flat out pissed. Very gracious with Darcis at the net, lots of smiling and clapping to the crowd, mostly annoyed at the journos in the pressroom rather than downbeat etc... Doesn't seem like he really expected much of himself here this year so I don't think he'll be taking any long hiatuses this time.

Winning Indian Wells means nothing. He's played a ton since then and will be going into the USO with a beaten up body.

What does he expect? Plays 9 finals straight after his return on fragile knees. Clueless buffoon will never learn how to schedule.

Signing autographs was a big surprise to me. Like you said he was maybe not expecting much. I think it is good to lose early and concentrate on the next slam. Pressing hard for victory when injured aggravates the situation.

But that is the cost and effort at which he earns the grandslams. He would lose Roland Garros too if he chooses not to play lead up tournaments and as many matches as possible. He had to defend Roland Garros at any cost. And then he can have a leisured approach to the remaining three slams.

He should never be counted out though, don't you agree?

No.

Tomic will.

Tomic [tom-ic] [tom-ic-ing]

1. apply yourself for a small period of time before giving up. (I am tomicing this match).
noun
2. play exceedingly well for a month and then give fallacious promises to the world. (He performed a Tomic)

Re: Prediction: Nadal will win US Open 2013

Grass is by far his second best surface so not sure how OP can even make a prediction after such a loss.. Rafa is only charting into scary territory the next few months in the US. This has historically been one of his toughest sections of the season for him. Just let him take his time, Canada will definitely be the best barometer as Cincinnati has always been a poor event for him.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

No, he should never be counted out but it is hard to see him win it.

Nadal fluked a couple of non clay slams. Granted. He won't win anything relevant off of the dirt anymore though.

Re: Prediction: Nadal will win US Open 2013

Anything is possible, but I would be shocked if Nadal wins this year's USO. More likely, he may skip the summer hard court season in the US, as he has no points to defend, and concentrate on the Asian tour. These past two years proves that Nadal would have had little chance of winning Wimbledon in the Sampras, or pre Sampras eras, when the grass was faster and thicker in the back court area. His game and movement is just not suited for fast or slippery grass courts.

Start by predicting he'll win one round...baby steps.

Re: Prediction: Nadal will win US Open 2013

We can't even be sure he'll play USO. He didn't last year, and refused to play AO this year just because he wasn't ready to win. He's already qualified for the World Tour Finals.

Plus don't forget he needs to peak for Basel.
