Really nice win, but he also played great in eariler stages in Rome and totally folded against Nadal, so hard to draw much from it.

If he keeps this level to that QF, he will be very tough to beat by Nadal. But that's a serious "if".

Crushing Spitescu doesn't mean a whole lot.
Promising start, though.

Basically. His early round matches these days should get a stock response: 'Federer looked very sharp but was never taken out of his comfort zone. Will withhold judgement until he plays a quality opponent.'

Wake me up when Federror faces the very first decent opponent. Looks good when your playing a mug from his generation of weak untalented lap dogs.

Posters like you and rutinos are so amusing. It's obvious you'd prefer a Falla type match where Fed looks as if he's going to lose in R1, and when he doesn't, you're even more upset because Fed fans aren't disconsolate that he has won, and won easily. What exactly do you want us "folks in here" to do? Weep when he loses, and weep when he wins too? Pshaw!

I don't see this kind of reaction when any other player wins easily. So Roger played a guy who couldn't hurt him and dispatched him quickly - what was he supposed to do? Purposefully struggle a little bit so we can't then all come on and say he looked great?

The thing is that he's making a habit of dominating early in a tourney and then fading late; thus there's little to be taken from his early round performances these days. Once he starts maintaining his form from beginning to end during tournaments again it will be appropriate to salivate over his early round drubbings.

Federer But winning easily against these players isn't surprising. Wait till the proper challenger comes and we'll see how great Federer is at the moment.
But still well done for a great first round match!:cheer:

Has it occurred to you that it's possible we aren't reading any Delphic omens into a simple win - that we're just enjoying a good performance? sheesh! And if we don't salivate over his early round drubbings, what exactly do you suggest we do? Go around with long faces bemoaning how poorly he played?

as a federer fan, i pretty much agree with this.

So WHAT? Are we not allowed to enjoy beautiful grass-court tennis just because the opponent is a mug?
