Nadal has other interest for sure, beating Fed in front of his home Basel.

I remember reading something about Ferrero being jealous of Nadal (when they were both on the tour).

It's almost as 'bad' as the Nole open was. Novak bought a tournament for himself
It's not like his parents had the money to buy it.

Not that anyone minded. He would spank all of them (players playing the Nole open) even if it wasn't his.

But then we (Serbia) had an ATP tournament (until 2013) and a CH (until 2010) for two years. Now the biggest tournaments in Serbia are futures

You compare that to Croatia (2 ATPs + 1 CH) and Bosnia (with no players in top200) has 2 CHs. Slovenia got their CH. Freaking pathetic.

Poor nadal will be destroyed, should have played Valencia with full of his spanish lapdogs.

Really glad he chose Basel, hope he plays and doesn't run away like in Halle.

And Nadal probably shouldn't be playing any Euro indoor 500s anyway.
Madrid is a Master so he's not playing there out of the goodness of his heart. He has to play it.

With the way the schedule is,it felt like Nadal had to play Basel or Valencia and then skip Bercy and play WTF.I can`t imagine him playing back to back weeks indoors, and obviously he wants to do ok at WTF so he needed to play a tournament.
Obviously Basel has a better offer then Valencia so he chose that.Simple as that.

Yes, I am too, but one thing is that he wants to play Basel and another thing is if he'll really play it. End of the season used to be critical for him, so I can't understand, why he wants to play 500. Playing and focusing on Shanghai and Paris would be enough for him, there's no need to compress his scheduling....

I agree with everything.

Monaco - Del Potro - Nadal - Wawrinka - Robredo - Simon - Berdych - Djokovic - Chardy

yes this, Basel is not exactly quiet about the large fees they will pay players to participate, ala the word around that Federer was going to get 1 m appearance fee that has been hushed a bit

Ffs Nadal is not playing Basel for money.

It is obvious Rafito knows that he doesn't have much time left in Tennis, due to his injuries.

Therefore he wants to win the big tournaments he has not yet won yet.

Because of this he will have to play the tournaments that will prep him the best for the big ones. Basel is better prep for WTF than Valencia.

Only scrubs play Valencia.

Masters can be skipped/tanked/medical-ed if the will is there. Were he to skip a clay event, I'd think it would be Madrid over Barcelona. That thinking might change now that they've improved the court conditions in Madrid though.

Madrid is just icing on the cake anyway. He already plays a Spanish 500 event in Barcelona. The Valencia issue is a non-starter.

I think he only gets a free pass for one right now. He definitely has the 600 matches exemption. I think 2002 counts as his first full 'year of service', so I don't think he's met the twelve years requirement yet.
