CARLOS MOYA INTERVIEW...
November 12 2002
Carlos Moya (d. Safin 64 75)
QUESTION: Carlos, what took you so long to get here? You took longer than Anna Kournikova.
CARLOS MOYA: I had to do a treatment and that's the reason I come late. Sorry.
QUESTION: Two weeks after you lost to Marat, how did you find the strategy to beat him this time?
CARLOS MOYA: I think the court was different, tournament is different. In that tournament, he won three matches already, then he played me, so I think is better to play Marat the first day, but still I think today I have been able to return his serve very well and I put him under a lot of pressure, so I think that was the difference.
QUESTION: Carlos, this is the first time in China, in Shanghai. What do you think of the response from the Chinese crowd?
CARLOS MOYA: I think they were great. It was a great atmosphere and they were involved in the match, so when you see all the crowd involved there and supporting both players, is great. You feel better. You feel more you have to do your best and I think the crowd have been great.
QUESTION: Both players are both playing off the baseline. During the match, when is the turning point? Which points are the crucial points which turn the match around?
CARLOS MOYA: Well, I thought when it was very important to take the first set and then I thought the match was over when I broke his serve at 4-all, I was serving 5-4, and he played a great game there and I was lucky to break him back right after he broke my serve, so when I had 6-5, I realised that I could not miss that second chance, so I had to take it and I took some risk and, you know, I took advantage of it, but, you know, when I was serving for the match, for the second time, I realised that was going to be the time, the right time to win the match.
QUESTION: As we all know, Mr Moya has ever been selected as the 50 sexest people in the world by the People magazine. So I want to know to your opinion, was the reason for you to keep charming.
CARLOS MOYA: I think to be top 10 is a good reason to be in that list. When you win matches and you have good ranking, people look you in different way. So I think that was the main reason.
CARLOS MOYA: I also was lucky to look like my brother who is there, you know, he's very handsome also, so you know, I be lucky to look like him. So that's one of the reasons.
QUESTION: You think Carlos do you think in 5-4 was a good moment to break his service or with you prefer to play tie-break in the second set?
CARLOS MOYA: Is good also to win tie-break, but, you know, if you can beat him before is, you know, for sure that in 5-4 you win that game for sure you win that set. But tie-breaker been feeling very confident this year playing tie-break, but I prefer to win 6-4.
QUESTION: Is there a hat trick before coming to the press conference. Anything wrong with the body and the second
QUESTION is you will play the winner of Hewitt and Costa. Which one you prefer to meet first?
CARLOS MOYA: First question, I had some problems with my back, but it was not that bad, but I had to take care of it and take treatment. And the second, well, I think Costa can play really well here. The surface is not that bad for his kind of game. I think you can play very well from baseline here. He has improved a lot lately and the last years on this kind of surface, so I think he's going to be very dangerous for Hewitt and Hewitt is No. so I think he prove to everybody that he can play well here and he can win the tournament, but I prefer Costa because it would mean that he beat Hewitt.
QUESTION: There are three as we all know, there are three Spanish players in this masters cup and do you think your win tonight is good start for the rest of the Spanish players?
CARLOS MOYA: I think so because I think the master cup is a different tournament than any other one, so maybe they've got motivation, watching my match and watching that the Spanish guy won that match, so I think it's going to help them to win their matches and will be great for the Spanish tennis to have three victors today.
QUESTION: Carlos, during the match the Marat come to the net frequently and to try to bring pressure from the net. Have you expect him to play that because it looks your return is good and do you have any special preparations for his kind of play.
CARLOS MOYA: Well, I played him in we are see a few weeks all and he was coming to the net very often. I think he has been working a lot on that the last couple of years and I think he improved a lot his volley, so I expected him to come to the net very often and what I tried in Paris also I tried to return his serve, but I couldn't and I wasn't able to read his serve and the serve was much faster than these ones so was very difficult for me but here I tried to return and I know he doesn't feel as comfortable when you put many returns in because he's used to dominate the point with the first serve and that's what I try a do today, to put all the returns in and try to play every single point.
Q. When you've played as few matches as you have over the last two, three months, did you ever lack motivation to go out and practice?
ANDY RODDICK: Motivation? No. I enjoy what I do. I enjoy what I do. You know, I've never been one to, you know, blow off practice or, you know, do anything like that.
You know, I'd be lying if I said I'm looking forward to practicing the next two days as opposed to playing here. That part is gonna suck...(2010 Aegon Championships)
