Is Marat Mikhailovich Safin on his way to the International Tennis Hall of Fame?

I think so. Marat Safin can still do alot more in his career. But I think that owning 2 grand slam singles titles, being in 4 grand slam finals, 2002 Davis Cup champion for Russia, former #1 and the second youngest men's tennis player to make the #1 ranking on the computer have put Marat Mikhailovich Safin on the road to the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

You said it, there's not much more to add from my side except that he also holds the record of most rackets broken in one season and he's the first man to be fined for tanking. That makes him a legend.

SINCE THERE'S NO TENNIS ACTION I WENT FOR TONGUE ACTION

If they let Yannick Noah in, surely Safin is qualified. (and I mean no disrespect to Noah, by the way).

I had forgotten about the tanking incident in 2000 Maratski. But thanks for reminding me.

MisterQ, Yannick Noah was a very good tennis player at his peak and a dynamic personalty his entire career. But in my opinion he wasn't a Hall of Fame tennis player mostly because he only made 1 grand slam final in his career and never made it to #1 on the ATP computer.

That is my opinion as well, cat. If the Hall is going to have real meaning, it ought to be very selective.

But now that Noah is in, it seems to guarantee two-slam former No. 1's a spot, as well as the more accomplished one-slam winners, for better or for worse...

MQ, is Hewitt the youngest ever to make #1 on the ATP computer in 2001 or was is Safin in 2000?

And I think that the Hall of Fame's I follow have been watered down over the years into the Hall of very good's and I can't understand why.

Re: Is Marat Mikhailovich Safin on his way to the International Tennis Hall of Fame?

Yes, I think that Marat will definitely get in, for all the reasons that were already stated; also the fact that he has won 2 of the 4 different slams, not just 2 at the same slam, adds to his all-round credentials.

In answer to your question cat, Hewitt is the youngest ever number one to date, just edging out Safin by a month or so: he was 20 years and 8 months old when he first became number one, while Safin was 20 years and 9 months old.

Safin can retire tomorrow and he'd get in eventually.

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Jon W. actually already has a formula for this, stated in his last column. MS has a score of .5, which already gets him in, along with Lleyton Hewitt.
