The defeats that made you sad, upset and the like

As there is a thread with the wins that made you happy, let's start one about the ones that made you sad...

I'll start:
-2001 US Open QF Kafelnikov def. Guga - I was confident to see Guga go even further, and that's when we really discovered he had a bad injury...
-2002 US Open F Sampras def. Agassi - I was so hoping to see Andre win this one...
-2003 Indian Wells F Hewitt VS Guga - Guga was beaten so easily, after having an awesome week (beating Federer and Schuettler on his way)..
-2003 Monte Carlo 1st Norman VS Guga - Guga leading 6-1, 5-2, then totally collapsed...
-2003 Montreal SF Roddick def. Federer - Federer having the lead, could have been #1 in the world at that moment, but wasn't able to close it out..
-2004 Roland Garros QF Nalbandian VS Guga - I was dreaming about a victory for Guga, but his injury really diminished his chances and it was painful to watch...

Guga Kuerten

Roger Federer & Novak Djokovic

AO Final - Safin d Hewitt. Hewitt needed to win IMO to get all the public and media pressure off his back.

2001 Wimbledon Final Ivanisevic d Rafter - Rafter was never to win a Winbledon title.

2000 Winbledon Final - Sampras d Rafter

2001 AO SF Agassi d Rafter

2002 Roland Garros final. In hindsight, good for Costa. At the time? UGGGGHHHH.

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Re: The defeats that made you really sad

When Horna beat Roger 1R RG 2003. Commentators talking a lot about not fulfilling potential, will he ever break through etc. etc. 4 weeks later he turned it round and won Wimbledon but that RG loss was really depressing to watch.

This year's Aussie Open final was sad for me too. I know everyone loves Marat but I really wanted Lleyton to win that match more than any. Especially disappointing after the first set.

Also I was never really a Pete fan. Pete at Wimbledon especially never excited me but watching him lose on Court 2 to Bastl that day made me quite sad. Seeing him leave the court was sad that day.

Re: The defeats that made you really sad

I remember being especially sad when Safin defeated Agassi in 2004 AO.

All of Andre's US Open losses to Pete were tough, as were his losses to Rafter in consecutive Wimbledon semis.

Re: The defeats that made you really sad

1999 French Open final when Medvedev had 2 sets to love lead and a break, then a rain delay helped Agassi get back into and later win the match.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

I very much agree!!!!!!!

Safin last year at AO was hard to take for me, 'cause he made such a strong run through all kinds of peril.
The first AO final loss was ridiculous, but I don't think I took it as hard. Maybe I wasn't as invested yet.

Thanks for the memories, Andre!! Long live Flake! Go Saf!

I agree on that one. I was rooting for Andrei too. I vaguely remember the first two sets being played in really windy conditions and Agassi not coping well at all.

I guess in hindsight it was a bit of history seeing someone win a Slam to complete the set but I was not caring about history at the time!

I also forgot to add Goran's 3rd Wimbledon final loss. He lost to Pete in 5 sets and looked awful walking off court. He really looked totally devastated. When he won in 2001 though it was maybe the happiest I have been seeing someone win a Slam so it evened out. The more you think of Goran winning Wimbledon in 2001 the more surreal and amazing it seems.
