Didn't see the first two sets but the last three were very entertaining, lots of fun rallies and spectacular winners. Ward's BH, BH DTL in particular, is a great shot but Donskoy's BH CC is on par with it. I think it was Donskoy's court coverage and his more potent forehand that won him the match. Such a great and valuable experience for him.
The shot of the day goes to Ward though. Even two shots -- he saved two match points with absolutely ridiculous on-the-run BH CC passing shots.

Donskoy was so mentally solid in the second half of the third set, even when he was a break down.

Ward played better than his ranking, like at Wimbledon last year. What is up with these Brits only being able to perform really well on home turf?

They can't deal with the metronomic grind of having to show up to a futures or challenger event most weeks and perform. On the big stage, they can seem deceivingly good.

The problem lies in the LTA funding system. They get paid quite handsomely with no major incentive to work harder to improve.

He took a guy ranked over 130 places above him to 8-6 in the fifth. He lost but that's a great effort.

It took Donskoy to dial in but once he did, he was able to bring some of the stuff that snatched a set off Murray in Indian Wells - this guy is a good player, make no mistake.

Watched the most of this match, and I think I did the right choice of watching this instead of any of World Group matches. A rather interesting, pretty good quality match overall. Loved the way Ward saved 2 match points with those running BH CC passing shots. Actually, felt kind of sorry for Wardy, it was a great effort today, definitely didn't deserve to lose and fought very well till the end.

Russia a bit lucky to be 2-0 up after today, but the tie is pretty much over now.

Donskoy always puts in a good show against the Brits.

Re: EU G2 R2: Donskoy d. Ward 4-6 4-6 7-5 6-3 8-6 (GB 0-2 RUS)

The real shame is that if Andy was to play every tie, GB might well win the Davis cup.

You figure he could pretty much always win his 2 singles matches(maybe unless we were playing Serbia), and then you have both Murray's, Colin Fleming, Jonny Marray and Ken Skupski to form a doubles team from who could beat most teams.

Honestly even if Ward/Evans was the second singles player we could probably beat anybody except Serbia(Murray would need to beat Djokovic), or the USA(We'd need to beat the Bryan brothers)
