Gulbis: Some in Top 100 ‘can't play tennis’

Forrmer Delray Beach champion Ernests Gulbis tells the*Sun Sentinel*that there are players ranked inside the Top 100 who aren’t very good. The Latvian, who had to qualify for this week's tournament in Delray Beach, has seen his ranking drop from a career-high No. 21 in February 2011 to No. 109.“I was really getting pissed to see who's in the top 100,'' the 24-year-old Gulbis said. "There are some guys who I don't know who they are. Some guys, I'm sorry, with respect—they can't play tennis."Gulbis, who has been said by some to have Top 10 potential, hired coach Gunther Berezniki last summer and said that he is in better shape and ready to fulfill his potential."This is the first year I really want to do this,'' Gulbis said. "I'm starting to enjoy tennis much more. Before I didn't like it, honestly. I had a couple of good wins and enjoyed it. Then I went on the wrong path and was doing wrong stuff for my game. Now, I want to play maybe five more years and do the best I can. My goal is to win something big."

How do you say with respect that someone can't play the sport?

Well, I guess he speaks from experience then

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

Refreshing to see him speak his mind

The reason why people attended the Del Potro v Lu match at AO 2012:

Guise, I've skimmed through a sports psychology book, so I'm an expert at this.

Saying things like these keeps your confidence up and keeps you motivated at the same time (because of the pressure you've created). If Gulbis is going to keep losing and if he won't get back to the top 100, he'll look like a right twit. Which is great for motivation.

Not that what he said would be wrong anyway.

"I like pure vodka."

yeah, I've seen this on another board and I was laughing. Gulbis is a clown, but a talented one. I've always liked him. well, it seems that he is ready to change, he seems to be more determined, but unless I see it I won't believe it . It's funny when he says "There are some guys who I don't know who they are. Some guys, I'm sorry, with respect—they can't play tennis". I think he is frustrated with himself ... However, I'm glad he didn't mention any specific names of 'those top 100 he doesn't know'

Well he can't since he doesn't know their names in the first place
