Nadal: ‘I'm missing things that make me competitive’

After struggling to beat 111th-ranked lucky loser Martin Alund of Argentina in three sets in the Brazil Open semifinals on Saturday, Rafael Nadal says he’s far from his top form. Nadal just came back last week after spending seven months nursing a knee injury. He will play his friend David Nalbandian in the final.

"I’m missing all the things that make me competitive and give me physical confidence, something I’ve had for my whole career and that right now, given the circumstances, I don’t have,” he told reporters. “I’m playing with what I’ve got and I hope to get stronger every day... I’m lacking speed in my reactions. I’m lacking energy when I need it. I’m lacking power in my legs to be able to hit the ball deep."

Intentionally losing that second set to get more match practice.

Saying what is there for everyone to see (whether they want to see it or not). He's lacking the intangibles that make him almost unbeatable. Hope they'll return quickly

nadal struggling

djokovic and murray will be licking their lips for indians wells or miami, depending which one nadal plays*

even frauderer might repeat his fluke win from last year

*this would be the sensible thing to do. but of course, nadal will play singles and doubles at both indian wells and miami, because he is a scheduling retard
