Has Anyone ever won a tournament losing more points than they won?

Simple question.

Matches where a player loses more points than the won are kinda common, we see a few every week. Usually occurs when a player wins 2 close sets, often tiebreaks and gets blown out in the other set.

Rarely does said player have 3 or 4 such matches though. But they could have 2 where they lose more points and then 2 or 3 other close ones.

Say a player wins round 1 7-6 1-6 7-6 losing 7 more points
Wins round 2 7-5 7-6 winning 9 more points
Wins QF 2-6 7-5 7-6 losing 4 more points
Wins SF 7-6 7-6 winning 1 more point
Wins final 6-4 0-6 7-5 losing 3 more points

That player would have lost 4 more points throughout the tournament than he won. Has something like this happened?

I doubt it's happened, that would be a lot of extreme luck/fortune in matches throughout the whole tournament. would be interesting if one of the stats guru's on this site knows

<3 Roger Federer <3 David Ferrer <3 Juan Martin Del Potro <3 Ernest Gulbis <3

------------------------ <3 Richard Gasquet <3

Hewitt 2002 Tennis Masters Cup came to mind, close is kind of interesting right?

Match point differential (in order of matches)

-8

So +10 is the closest anyone can find?

I never thought I'd see the day when I stumped the stats gurus of this site

It is a bit of a bizarre question though, tough to look up

Re: Has Anyone ever won a tournament losing more points than they won?

The two obvious ones I thought to look at were the runners up performances of Isner at Washington 2007 and Simon at Madrid 2008 but neither of these even came close to negative points won across their matches as a whole.

Andy Murray

Gilles Simon - Juan Martin del Potro - Grigor Dimitrov

Pablo Andujar - Philipp Petzschner - David Ferrer - Mikhail Youzhny - Simone Bolelli

Julien Benneteau - Juan Monaco - Tommy Haas - Gianluigi Quinzi - Tommy Robredo - Guido Pella - Lleyton Hewitt

It would have to be a guy who twice won 76 16 76 or the like, for a negative in individual matches.

Look at the South American clay events would be my guess. Especially Vina.

I was thinking about a tournament won by a Lucky Loser, as Stakhovsky did in Zagreb 2008. However, I looked at the stats of Stakhovsky in this tournament and I realized that it was an epic fail from my part, as you can see:

Run made by Stakhovsky in Zagreb 2008:

Q1: +19
Q2: +15
Q3: -4 (Loose)
R32: +5
R16: +9
QF: +2
SF: +13
F: +6

Total difference between points won/lost: +65

I'd love to see which Slam win had the fewest points won/lost differential, or even a negative result if possible.

I don't know if I'm doing it wrong but here from Karlovic I count:

R32: +9
R16: +10
QF: +9
SF: +21
F: +4

Total difference points won/lost: +53

Neither the lowest ranked player to win an ATP tournament (Hewitt in Adelaide 1998) and the lowest ranked player to win a Masters 1000 title (Roberto Carretero in Hamburg 1996) are the man we are looking for
