nadal says life is more important than tennis and that he wants to be able to play sports recreationally after he retires. He also says he can't/won't change his playstyle.

I only see 3 possible solutions: either he retires, the ATP caters to his whining and changes trhe tour to only clay and grass or he continues to play but only on grass and clay.

It would be no problem if he just said "that's my personal opinion" instead of this "the fans want it" crap.

Nadal thinks higher quality tennis will be played if you get to take longer breaks than the rules stipulate.

Other sports might consider this too. I'm sure a football match would be of higher quality with more and longer breaks. Instead of halves we could have eights, or possibly sixteenths. All for the good of the game. Would make commercial breaks easier too. The audience? Surely they wouldn't mind staying longer to watch a match with more intensity.

Sports like marathon running or triathlon should also consider breaks. They would definitely have a higher quality performance then. Cyclists also. What's the use of roadside bistros if you don't visit them along the way?

This could start a trend around the sports world.

sounds like American football

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

Where did he say that?

This is what was quoted in the article: “People want to see long matches, competitive rallies and amazing shots. For me to play in a high level for four hours, I need more than 25 seconds,”

He basically says people want to watch longer matches and that for him to play 4+ hours matches he needs more than 25 seconds.

Of course no one is saying that after a 20+ stroke rally players shouldn't be allowed a bit more time but after every point going for the towel to wipe nonexistent sweat or bouncing the ball 30 times or picking your butt or doing anything else that makes you take more than 25 seconds is stupid.

Also, it may be just me, but I think nadal is more worried about himself and his agenda than the sport or the fans.

Nadal is right about the hardcourts, though. It was massive blunder to discontinue carpet and green clay. Less hardcourts, better for everyone. No hardcourts = best for everyone!

If everyone consists of clay court specialists, then yes, it's definitely better for everyone.

NO!!!! The problem of the old rule was that umpires weren't able to control it. And if umpires now start giving more time, the rule gets meaningless.

I won't change my style but its okay for the tennis world to change rules for him? What a drama queen!

I wish the grass and hard courts were never slowed down in the first place.

his post tennis golf career, when he'll be whining in the clubhouse about how the greens are too fast and some of the holes are not designed to his shape of shots

bunkers have too much sand for him, balls are too big, hole is too small
grass is too green

too much windy.

There were never many green clay events and they were all small. Even if all of them were still in the calendar, Nadal wouldn´t play a single one of them. Carpets existed only in indoor events during the fall (excluding some february-indoor events that he would play in one, if that), and he wouldn´t play many of those either. The tour has always been primarily hard courts and clay, with some grass events, and a brief indoor season. The biggest problem is the that the hard corts are so smuch slower than before. That causes the longer rallies and is ultimately tougher for the body. But in addition to some knee issues, Nadal also got a US Open, an AO and two Wimbledon titles because of this, so it´s hard to feel too bad for him.

I agree that for the sake of the game there should be some carpet events, and why not green clay, too. But their absence is not the reason for Rafa´s knee issues.
