And people thought Chardy had a chance of troubling Nadal, LOL.

The only one that will have a chance against Nadal during the clay season is Djokovic.

And so begins one of the most interesting post-injury runs in recent time. Heading towards RG will be very exciting indeed. Hopefully he doesn't start to steamroll too soon or else they should just mail him the titles. Will the clay god be a mere mortal this spring? Stay tuned.

Nadal slowly but surely finding his rhythm. Chardy was god awful... MASSIVE let down in the match I thought would be the best this tournament, no tactics, no flashes of brilliance, just looked lost out there, mug.

Chardy was not there at all and Nadal was just full of energy to show off.Everyone of the players in this tournament knows Nadal is there to take the title and they to be roasted. No one of Nadal's opponents show desire to fight. Why is this ? It is really boring.

WTF? 4 games? Peak Nadal would not let Chardy get 1 game on this surface. Sad times for tennis

yeah I actually agree with this, I was watching the match with somebody else and we kept mentioned "why do the players look like they are hardly moving / limited footwork?", probably is slow as shit so Nadal hardly has to move around. Chile was so happy to have him come after all, good for politics and money maker

seriously I love Rafa but I wouldn't be shocked if the tournament deliberately made sure the clay was extraordinarily slow. the turnout for this tournament just because of the Nadal factor has to be over 5x what it is normally. probably more

of course clay is pretty slow almost no matter how you lay it or mix it, except of course for the infamous blue clay... haha

He did Chardy is one of the most bipolar players on tour, when 'on' his game is awesome, easily top 10. When 'off' though, it's a complete disaster, WTA mindless ballbashing at its best. That's why his ranking is not higher, although not as streaky as someone like Rosol he's way too inconsistent.

Next week should tell us more about Nadal's form, tougher draw overall even if not too tough.

MTF games titles:

Suicide Tennis (5): Wimbledon 2014, World Tour Finals 2015, Madrid 2015, Kuala Lumpur 2014 and Metz 2015 - 1 Slam, 1 WTF, 1 Masters 1000, 2 ATP 250; 2 finals lost

Fill-in-the-Draw (3): US Open 2014, Rotterdam 2013 and Geneva 2015 - 1 Slam, 1 ATP 500 and 1 ATP 250

Tennis Tipping (3): Veneza and Todi 2014 (with vn01), Knoxville 2015 (with Redkop) - 3 challengers; 7 finals lost

When On is a great player definitely. But that's not enought to trouble Nadal on clay.

In his first tournament back? I think so... DGT could easily have won the 2nd set against him
I think a ballbasher when on will trouble Nadal no matter how well he's playing. Almagro would have beat him in RG 2010 if he were better mentally (had chances to win every set, especially 1st and 3rd IIRC, and 2nd was a breaker)

In general, I'd agree. His backhand is too weak to hang with Nadal on clay even if he's on fire. But he could definitely have at least tested this 'comeback Nadal' if he wasn't in WTA ballbashing mode today. Let's see if someone can do it (test Nadal) in Sao Paulo, draw is a bit better overall.
