WWW Rotterdam 500: Federer, Del Potro and Tsonga Head the Field

Rotterdam is usually a cool tournament and the field this year makes me expect another great one, with three of the seven best players in the world competing.

Federer and Del Potro played the final last year (with Fed winning easily) and they are the top 2 seeds again this year, but there's another top 8 player in the field - Tsonga, who loves playing indoors. It will be interesting to see whether Tsonga falls in Del Potro or Federer's half as it could impact the outcome of the tournament.

There's more to this field though: Gasquet will be #4 seed and Janowicz #8 seed. Davydenko, Bagdathis, Dimitrov, Tomic and Monfils will also be there. Most of these guys could take out one of the top 3 seeds, but even if they do I definitely expect one of Federer, Del Potro or Tsonga to take the title - Federer the obvious favorite of course, that goes without saying. I, for one, hope Tsonga takes this one.

Draw will come out tomorrow.

EDIT:

Has potential to be an exciting tournament. I suspect if B-Nard is playing his best he will probably take it out but it will still be interesting to see how it all unfolds...

go Rog.

D:

Nadal "Sampras, Ivanisevic match. or one between those kind of players, is not enjoyable. It's not really tennis. it is a few swings of the racquet. For me in the past it was just serve. serve". arrogance.

clay excluded. successive win 0. If grass and a hard are fast. Like Sampras era. Nadal is able to win only with clay. power of defense and muscles. boring ugly. All the surface is slow now.

fake time-out. cheat. gamesmanship. too noisy annoying always. excuse. boycotts threatened. always dissatisfaction cry complaints. dissatisfaction to schedule. selfish two-year ranking. bump to player. ugly protest. always exaggerated appeal of self condition. etc. overrated by fanatic arrogant blind fan

Roger should defend this title with no problems. Even playing at 50%.
I'd like Tsonga to beat Delpo in an eventual semi, I like that matchup (but please, Jo, tank to Delpo in Davis Cup )

I hope you're joking. Federer at 50% will lose to BOTH Tsonga and Del Potro, and maybe some other players in the draw. Even if he goes all out, there's no guarantee that he will win at all. This is not 2004-2007 anymore (and even then Federer wasn't unbeatable), if it was 2004-2007 you could safely give Federer a 90% chance to take the title even if he didn't play his best, but he has lost to both Delpo and Tsonga quite a few times in recent years even at Slams and will lose more times - in fact Delpo won their last two indoor meetings.

Yeah I think if he continues with his actual form, Fed will win this one. Hope DelPo won't trouble him

Federer played at 50% and still defeated Tsonga in a really intense match.
Delpo didn't showed anything this 2013, the highlight is a loss to Chardy in slow hardcourt.

I'm not stupid, dude, I know it's not 2004-2007, but Fed played great tennis for the most of last year, and the early rounds of AO. I'm stick to that opinion, Federer easily taking the title. Take it, or leave it.

I'm not sure we watched the same match. But as you said, Federer played great in the first few rounds of AO and he suddenly was 50% against Tsonga? I suppose that could have nothing to do with the fact that Tsonga is a much tougher opponent than the ones Federer faced previously and can put Federer under far more pressure.

I say your prediction will be wrong. Federer can definitely take the title, he's the favorite to do so actually, but it will not be easy unless Delpo and Tsonga lose early - even then, more players in the draw could give Fed a tough time. Both Tsonga (if he draws Fed in semis) and JMDP will at worst push him. Just look at the last 4 matches Federer played against each of them, when did he ever win easily?

He's better than last year, and so was his AO. He reached QF in 2011 because of a ridiculously easy draw and then got routed by Federer, he played much worse than vs Chardy in pretty much all of his matches in AO 2011. AO 2012, he at least played great in the first two rounds and even if he had an off day vs Chardy a loss to an on-fire Chardy is far from horrible. Watching the matches and not just looking at the scoreboard, Delpo's 2013 AO was far more encouraging than 2012, where he basically limped his way through very weak opponents until inevitably getting demolished by a Federer that didn't even need to play well.

Tsonga and delpo will be in the same half because the organizers want to guarantee Fed in the final. Gasquet will be in Fed's half. Fed breezes to the title defense.
