Roberto Carretero.

He won Hamburg '96, for the 2 people that remember.

If I remember correctly, he had a quick serve motion and was strong off the ground. More aggressive than your average Spanish clay player.

I was curious, and looked back through some old results... since I don't remember him even noticing him since he won Hamburg. He went on a Spadea-like streak after Hamburg... and he maybe has 10 MD wins in his entire career outside of his amazing Hamburg win.

So, what happened with Roberto? Just injuries?

Re: Roberto Carretero.

I saw him in Umag two years ago and he looked really overweight ...

Damn, Alex, you should have won that final!

Re: Roberto Carretero.

what happened was it was a fluke
and he lost the plot.

but he does hold the envious record of falling the record number of places of a player in Top 100 in one week with a full yrs tourn on his rank

Re: Roberto Carretero.

Wow, I remember watching him against Corretja in that final

After dropping the first set he basically pasted Corretja- it was a thing of beauty......

Re: Roberto Carretero.

Carretero said what it meant to him when he won Hamburg. He said something along the lines of "more wine and women". He definitely knew his way around a party and I remember when he and the Poo had some words during the Italian Open just after his Hamburg win.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Re: Roberto Carretero.

never heard of him to be honest.

Q. When you've played as few matches as you have over the last two, three months, did you ever lack motivation to go out and practice?

ANDY RODDICK: Motivation? No. I enjoy what I do. I enjoy what I do. You know, I've never been one to, you know, blow off practice or, you know, do anything like that.

You know, I'd be lying if I said I'm looking forward to practicing the next two days as opposed to playing here. That part is gonna suck...(2010 Aegon Championships)

Just for you and taken from the TMS Bolter thread that I started.

In my opinion the answer to this is the great Roberto Carretero the guy was ranked #143 at the time and qualified for the event he beat 4 seeded players to win and two very good claycourters as well.

Code:
R1:	Jordi Arrese 6-3,5-7,7-6(2)
R2:	MaliVai Washington (10)	6-1,6-0
R3:	Arnaud Boetsch (7) 6-4,6-1
QF:	Gilbert Schaller (16) 4-6,6-4,6-4
SF:	Yevgeny Kafelnikov (3) 7-5,6-2
F:	Alex Corretja 2-6,6-4,6-4,6-4
After that he jumped up 85 places and only won one match that year which was a default from Jordi Burillo in 1R US Open.

I remember watching the final, and maybe the SF as well.

That was quite an impressive tourney win, too. Sad that it was literally all he did in her career.

Re: Roberto Carretero.

Kafelnikov was dumbfounded and after he got over the nerves in the final against Corretja, he was on fire.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Then he was short and very stocky and now Alvarillo says he is rather fat these days. He used to have long hair, but I haven't seen him recently.

Though he was one of the players back in Spain joking about the Spanish chances in the DC final.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".
