Question Maximum number of ranking points

What is the maximum amount of race/entry points a player can accrue?

According to the ATP website, the year end race points are the points received from the 4 Grand Slams, the 9 Masters Series, the TMC and 5 best performances at optional tournaments.

Let's take a hypothetical situation where a player wins all 4 Grand Slams, all 9 TMS, the TMC (without losing any round robin matches) and 5 Int'l Series Gold (the optional events with the most ranking points)- what would be that player's point tally at the end of the year?

If winners receive 200 race points for a GS, 100 for a TMS, 150 for TMC (all RR matches won) and 60 for Int'l Series Gold then I calculate that player will have:

4x200 + 9x100 + 150 + 5x60 = 2,150.

Also, at year's end the race points multiplied by 5 give the year end entry points so they will be 5x2,150 = 10,750.

In short- 2,150 race points or 10,750 entry points.

Is this correct or am I missing something (bonus points for beating higher ranked players etc.)?

OK, so let's say 3 60 point events and 2 50 point events. That would add up to 2,130 race points or 10,650 entry points.

Where is Nitzan when we need him?

Re: Maximum number of ranking points

Ah I have always wondered what's the maximum amount of points a player can get! Just was too lazy to really calculate it. Thanks.

Try figuring it out for the WTA ranking system, and I'll give you a cookie.

You're welcome, but I'm not sure if it is 100% accurate- eg are bonus points taken into account? That is why I wanted one of the experts *cough* Nitsan *cough* to confirm/correct.

From Rick Vach, 3/19/2004

Under the pre-2000 ranking system, players received bonus points for beating other players ranked in the Top 200. But the ATP removed bonus points from the rankings last year (2000), citing "less relevancy" and the fact it makes the rankings "complicated."

"Research has shown that the bonus points are less relevant now than they were in the past," according to an ATP release. "In the days where fewer top players dominated the game, a win over a higher ranked player was more significant and worthy of a bonus. However with the dramatic increase in depth and equality in the men's game now, bonus points are less appropriate. In addition, within the new simple-to-understand annual ATP Champions Race, bonus points would have made it more complicated."
