Why did Pureta do nothing else except his RG final?

Okay okay we know he doped up to the eyeballs, but how come he never achieved anything else? Tennis is a high skillset sport unlike others. I mean surely dope alone doesn't make a top 500 player a slam finalist.

Or was it just one of those freak things that happens every decade or two, kind of like Chris Lewis making the Wimbledon final in 83?

To make a final and take a set off sub peak Nadal on clay, you can't do any better than that historicaly.

"I did not play my best tennis, no? And..that is what enable him to win..to win this match no? "

- Rafael Nadal, ever so "humble", - press conference after shock 4 set loss to Robeen Soderling @ 2009 French Open 4th round.

IIRC he also got a pretty easy draw - Coria went out and Fed was on the other side.

RIP Henry Chinaski. A true MTF legend

Re: Why did Pureta do nothing else except his RG final?

he was a decent claycourter - won a few titles, reached a couple of MS QFs, had that run and had a severely interrupted career for obvious reasons. not much else to say.

| Wins over 3+ of the Top 4. Players to reach all slam QFs+ in history. Hawkeye/Line Calls. QFs+ at Slams & Masters, but never Top 20.

Re: Why did Pureta do nothing else except his RG final?

He won a lead in tournament just before the French Open, Morocco or somewhere, if I remember correctly. Saw him play a practice match a couple of months before that and I couldn't believe my eyes, he was that explosive. No way did he just take a sip of medicated water from the wrong glass moments before the French Open final, which is how he explained his positive. He was more likely at it for months and months, in my view. Doping seemed almost routine at that time in Argentina with Canas, Chela and Coria all testing positive too. I think Puerta was popped twice, wasn't he, as he got a heavy ban the second time?

Yep. He was a decent clay-courter, nothing more.

And his RG run was when he played best tennis in his career.

i guess he won some tournaments.. but all his victories were written off or wiped off coz he was accused of doping...

they just let that french 2005 final runner up to be in the history books

Re: Why did Pureta do nothing else except his RG final?

He was a decent player at the end of the 90s, made one masters qf iirc, won a few 250-equivalents.

Career seemed to be drifting away into challengers after that though. Then in 2005..........

Quit while you're ahead. Picks up a nice cheque and decides not to press his luck.

Re: Why did Pureta do nothing else except his RG final?

The fact that Nadal and Federer were on the same side of the draw helped. And Coria lost early too.

still find it sad.. Doping turned him into a left-handed Fernando Gonzalez...what's not to like?
If only the guy had had some discipline

Re: Why did Pureta do nothing else except his RG final?

Same goes with Martin Verkerk who reached the final of the French Open in 2003.
It can happen that a guy randoomly gets to a slam final.
In 10 years from today, people will wonder how on Earth Sara Errani reached a slam final.

Allez Simon, you rock

Would they wonder so much were they to know which medical doctor was overseeing her physical preparation?

Verkerk actually won a tournament the year after (Amersfoort), but he suffered from alot of injuries. This was mostly his own doing, because even after his dreamrun, he just couldn't commit to the sport. He was constantly overweight and not trained enough.
