Isn't it time to set a 5th set tie break at the Australian Open?

The extension of matches on the 5th set tiebreak is turning players useless for their following matches or to finish with medical assistance. Does it make any sense? There are several cases in the past years (Only to mention in 2013 Djokovic-Wawrinka; Simon-Monfils; Monfils-Lu; Kavcic-Duckworth; Roger Vasselin-Bemelmans; Nieminen-Haas).

I wouldn't say to reduce matches of the whole tournament to three sets but probably on the first three rounds could be a good idea to keep the physical condition of players in order to have more resistance for the 2nd week of GS tournaments.

[B]My hall of fame: Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal-Jo Wilfried Tsonga-David Ferrer-Juan Carlos Ferrero-Tommy Haas- Radek Stepanek-Lleyton Hewitt-David Nalbandian-Guillermo Cañas-Carlos Moya-Pete Sampras-Petr Korda- Kent Carlsson-Richard Krajicek-Karol Kucera-Tim Henman-Alex Corretja-Thomas Muster-Michael Stich-Pat Cash-Patrick Rafter-Darren Cahill-Ivan Lendl-Mats Wilander-Miloslav Mecir-Karel Novacek-Joakim Nystrom-Henrik Sundstrom-Hans Simonsson-Anders Jarryd-Jimmy Connors-Bjorn Borg-Guillermo Vilas.

No, if anything the US Open should abolish the 5th set break.

No thanks because:
- Epic matches will be shortened.
- There will be less drama.
- The majority of people won't agree with it.

I personally like a compromise of going to a tiebreaker at 12-12 in the 5th set. 6-6 is just too early to go to a somewhat lotteryish tiebreaker, but at some point it is in both players interest to have the match end.

No. Tennis is actually supposed to be played with no tiebreakers at all but they were introduced as a last resort.

The scoring system where players take turns serving every second game is brilliant and no tiebreak in the fifth make for some epic matches in slams.

"The winner gets tired for next round"? Sure, but he has only himself to blame anyway for not finishing the match earlier.

Next.

Re: Isn't it time to set a 5th set tie break at the Australian Open?

obviously you're right in that it can make some extremely tough and grueling matches and hurt players, make them get owned next round, etc

BUT like GMSNadal mentioned, you have such epic matches with the extended 5th set! Roddick VS Federer, tonights match with Wawa and Novak, etc. it just creates such an awesome atmosphere. no reason to get rid of it

<3 Roger Federer <3 David Ferrer <3 Juan Martin Del Potro <3 Ernest Gulbis <3

One epic match + one substandard match > 2 normal matches.
