On what grounds? By what standard, really? His success as a junior]? At what time throughout his career has he shown any serious qualities of a top level player?

He is an extremely athletic specimen, I give you that. By some definition, he might even be talented. But never in his time on tour has he ever shown an aptitude for sustainable top-level tennis. He especially has never shown the mind for such, and it seems that he will be forever impeded by his awful mentality on court.

Athletic, I concede. Talented, okay. But how can we call him an underachiever if he hasn't really "achieved", on a professional level, the heights to which he is held?
Monfils could be the ultimate slow court era player. He is faster and more athletic than Nadal, Djokovic, Murray... and generates just as much power with his serve and groundstrokes as the biggest hitters on tour. He has the potential to be a big hitter with tireless grinding abilities.

Problem is he's a showman rather than a serious dedicated athlete and his tennis IQ on court often leaves a lot to be desired, his shot selection among other things (tactics, focus) are very questionable at best. I say give Monfils's raw talents to someone with, say, Murray's tennis IQ and work ethic and you have a potential CYGS winner imo. Monfils is the prime example of how at the highest level it's almost all between the ears.

MTF games titles:

Suicide Tennis (5): Wimbledon 2014, World Tour Finals 2015, Madrid 2015, Kuala Lumpur 2014 and Metz 2015 - 1 Slam, 1 WTF, 1 Masters 1000, 2 ATP 250; 2 finals lost

Fill-in-the-Draw (3): US Open 2014, Rotterdam 2013 and Geneva 2015 - 1 Slam, 1 ATP 500 and 1 ATP 250

Tennis Tipping (3): Veneza and Todi 2014 (with vn01), Knoxville 2015 (with Redkop) - 3 challengers; 7 finals lost

That was the most bizarre thing I've ever watched (in a bad way). I know what it feels like to get a second wind but this is an enigma. Should be investigated.

In the whole thread no one mentioned actually what have happened in that last game.

In the highlights I just saw he needed 6 Matchpoints and it was a long game.

But what actually happened in that last game?

This was such an awful match, but very funny to watch. I'm surprised Monf only had 23 DFs - it seemed like twice that amount.

Awful scoreline for Monfils but desperately need victories and that is what it counts after all on his comeback.

See, I actually don't disagree with any of this. I just disagree with is the notion that he's an underachiever because of those things, as he's never shown that he knows what to do with it all. His tennis IQ is virtually non-existent, and I'm not sure anything short of a brain transplant will mend that.

The difference between him and actual underachievers, in my mind, is that, to my memory, he's never produced the brilliance that his qualities would suggest he's capable of. Nalbandian, Safin - we've seen those guys produce the level of tennis that suggest they should (have) achieve(d) more. With Monfils, as of now, everything to this point has been suppositional.

Monfils hit some big serves (unreturnables & aces) to get to match points, but throw them away by hitting DFs. Lu was playing no part at all, you might as well put a member of the audience there. Monfils was hitting big serves on deuce and DFs on match points. Hilarious.
