Australian Open R1 F.Mayer overcame against Williams 2-6 3-6 6-2 7-6(12) 6-1

What a crazy 4th set Mayer's BP convert was terrible and he took many SPs at TB
Williams took several MPs but he didn't take all of them.

Williams had 2 MPs. Think Mayer converted 8th SP

Very odd match on the scoreboard. Play was suspended for a while in the 3rd set, was there an injury?

Ballboy threw up apparently. Perhaps a comment on the quality of the tennis.

Wow what a though loss for Williams after being two sets ahead and 14-12 in the TB !!
Still, the scoreline shows his potential. With Johnson and Sock, this guy should be in the top 100 at the end of the year

Yeah, well, at least it's better to be close than to be beat comprehensively, wouldn't you say? He knows he can compete. Next time could be better.

I guess so. I have faith in his skills but not so much his head. You can have all talent in the world but doesn't mean much if you can't finish. Sadly I have witnessed too many meltdowns from him.

This was an okay quality match, Williams should have taken this in the 4th set breaker but got some dodgy line calls and he let it affect him. Produced a GOAT racquet smash when he lost the set and never regrouped for the commencement of the 5th set.

Mayer had hurt his ankle earlier in the match and was moving gingerly at stages but won it comfortably in the end. Berankis will be a difficult assignment again though..

What a scoreline.

Good on Funky Flo to go through though
