Australian Open R1: (10) Almagro d. (q) Johnson 7-5 6-7(4) 6-2 6-7(6) 6-2

Almagro let it go to five for extra match practice (first match this year).

He has so many five setters in the first week of Slams. It's almost expected now no matter who he plays.

Not often do you see someone win more than 30 games in a match.

Good to see Mugro take it in the end

Tennis Fucking Sucks

Federer was the pioneer of first-strike all-court tennis. This is the real tennis and the beautiful game. Never forget the beauty of what was tennis. Nadull and Fakervic don't win tennis matches. They simply outlast their opponent with endless grinding and stamina. That is ugly. Beautiful tennis is gone now. Never forget the good days of real tennis.

Admirable effort by Johnson but had nothing in the tank in the 5th.

Almugro and outside court epics in slams go together like peanut butter and jelly. He was such a tit in that 4th set breaker- the look on his face when Johnson hit the line on mp was amusing.

Glad he got through but...

Always on the lookout for a great tennis match.

Pretty peeved at the result, but I didn't toss the remote at the tv until I heard Matts Wilanders' voice.

He practiced earlier with Djokovic and Tipsarevic and seemed to be in fine form, but I can tell you this Johnson guy sure has future

Hopefully that's just due to lack of match play. He was clearly the better player (31 to 23 games) so it was OK here.

Excellent.

Dream of a Nishi-Mugro QF hasn't faded yet.

Bolded part is so true. His body would appreciate less clowning around, but we're not going to ask him for super consistency in long matches.

Well, lets hope Steve Johnson continues to improve and maybe he becomes an ATP TOUR Plaer.

it wouldn't be a slam if Almagro didn't play an early 5-setter
the season has officially begun
