Steve Johnson = James Blake 2.0

Watching Steve play I see so many things that remind me of James. I don't know if being a "James Blake" in this era will mean the same kind of success James had but the BOLD BRASS IN UR FACE (dumb at times) tennis is back!

How do u guys compare the two? - am I crazy

Dunno about Blake but two TBs against a TB-specialist Almagro convinced me the guy has bright future

Great serve and decent forehand but he's no Blake.

Agreed, currently he is not. I'm making the case his game style, attitude, and weapons (and weaknesses) are similar to that of James. He's like this generations closes version of James.

No way! Blake had better movement, a waaay better BH. Johnson has a better attitude and a better serve though

Re: Steve Johnson = James Blake 2.0

Johnson seems slightly less fluid than Blake used to be. He's also less robotic on court, and somewhat inconsistent.

But you always have to be wary of players who are as successful as Johnson was at College Tennis. His ranking is misleading, considering he has only started playing challengers properly for a year.

Re: Steve Johnson = James Blake 2.0

Don't see the Blake comparison. Johnson's talent level seems lower; though he appears better at maximizing what he has through strategy. Style of play is significantly different (Blake actually bashed off his backhand). And their mental attitudes are polar opposites.

Always on the lookout for a great tennis match.

I mostly agree, just want to remind you of James' backhand in the early parts of his career. His BH was a huge liability, he some how managed, not just to neutralize it, but to later turn it into a weapon.

Maybe instead of Blake 2.0 he's simply a lesser version....still see a lot that reminds me of Blake

In any event, time will tell...

Re: Steve Johnson = James Blake 2.0

honestly I see nothing on this Johnson similar to James. Blake was an amazing ballbasher, his forehand and backhand were really guns, always hitting flat strokes. Johnson's lack of flat hits.

Miss you Blake!

Re: Steve Johnson = James Blake 2.0

I have seen both of them live this week and Johnson's groundstrokes have nothing on Blake's (on either side). I can't see any similarity at all. Also Blake is more aggressive off the ground and tries to hit winners earlier.

Re: Steve Johnson = James Blake 2.0

Don't think so. Johnson plays with far more spin and is slower than James in his younger years. In my opinion, Dolgopolov is more Blake-like than Johnson, especially as far as his forehand speed is concerned.
