Domino's Tagged Thread (OTW) Updated: 4/10/06

Well, I have found that I have taken a liking to looking at challengers and futures and seeing how many of these people competing look interesting due to age and performance. I thought it would be interesting to follow people mentioned here, and see if any make it to the top 100. I was inspired after the "young guns" thread, because it made me realize how much I enjoyed seeing the advancement of certain people I "tagged" at the beginning of the year. Rebecca also sparked my interest due to her persistent jabbering about Adam Chadaj. So here are people who I have so called "Tagged" and am looking at their results.

Janko Tipsarevic (SCG), age 20. Won two challengers, and reached the final of three others.

Gael Monfils (FRA), age 18. Won a futures event, but had an outstanding junior year followed by a neat performance in Metz and Paris.

Jo-Wilfred Tsonga (FRA), age 19. Won two challengers and Futures event, and beat Carlos Moya in an ATP event.

Nicolas Almagro (ESP), age 18. Won three challengers, reached another final, and won a futures. Played brilliantly in a close match with Coria in Hamburg.

Stanlislas Wawrinka (SUI), age 19. Won two challengers and reached the final of another. Won the junior French Open in his only junior event.

Roko Karanusic (CRO), age 20. Won a challenger. Yeah, not much, but has played consistantly enough to get to 135 at one point.

Andreas Seppi (ITA), age 20. Won two challengers, and almost made Hewitt into mincemeat in Rome until a rain delay and Hewitt recovered.

Brian Baker (USA), age 19. Won a Challenger and Futures event, and reached another futures final. Also took a set off Moya this year, who seems to be the punching bag of lower ranked opponents.

Ivo and Jan Minar (CZE), who are 20 and 21 respectively, and have won collectively several challengers and futures. I don't know if they are related.

Novak Djokovic (SCG), age 17, and has won two Futures and two challengers. My personal favorite, after seeing him earlier this year.

Marcos Baghdatis (CYP), age 19, and has won two challengers, beating two people in the top 50, Beck and Hrbaty, to win the latest. Hrbaty is even in the top 20. Another favorite. Also took a set of the world number one Roger Federer.

This may appear stupid, but I like this, and think it is nice to give credence to people starting their career who appear to have potential.

What a great idea for a thread! It doesn't appear stupid at all, silly. I already root for a few of those guys, so count me in

I lack direction.

Chocking makes me sad.

Re: Domino's Tagged Thread (OTW)

Thanks. I figure that I can keep on updating this thread every week during the season, adding people when needed, and posting results. Then, I don't know, we can "graduate" one if he succeeds. Other people can post their favs too, and I can try to update on them too. Who knows, we just might pick a future grand slam winner some day.

Re: Domino's Tagged Thread (OTW)

Well...I'll add:

Andy Murray (GB), aged 17 and ranked 510. Won 2 futures titles on clay and the semis of another, after losing half the year for knee surgery and recovery. Aiming to be in top 100 by May and top 50 by November. Few points to defend until June. Watch him!

Alex Bogdanovic (GB), aged 20 and ranked 196. Won 1 challenger, final and semi of another 2. Has beaten Gambill and Joachim this year - no mean feat. Has not played in 2 months - suspected injury. Few points to defend until June.

Josh Goodall (GB), aged 18 and ranked 363 (up to 325ish on Monday). Unranked until March, been challenger semifinalist, and finalist of 1 futures event. Could well make top 250 some time next year.

OLD GUY WORTH TAGGING: -

Jamie Delgado (GB), aged 27 and ranked 223. Risen over 300 places this year with 2 challenger semis. Few points to defend until June - could we see a resurgence (has been up to 121 in 2001)?

Re: Domino's Tagged Thread (OTW)

I'll update on the first three; however, unless Delgado does something drastic, I wont go beyond my early twenties limit, because I am trying to find young people, cause anybody can be included otherwise.

Sure man - I've kept tags on Delgado since 1998 and he was a hot prospect then. He peaked at 121 in August 2001 and since then fell away, completely in 2003, and now he has come back somewhat. He could make the top 150 again although like you say...unlikely.

Re: Domino's Tagged Thread (OTW)

Good idea!

Frank Dancevic (CAN), age 20 and ranked 177. Won 2 challengers and futures and reached final and semi of some other challengers. Won challenger double titles too. Beat Rusedki this year in a challenger event.

Re: Domino's Tagged Thread (OTW)

Great thread Domino, this one is almost as good as the claycourt threads.

Santiago Ventura (ESP) - This guy won Casablanca in his first ATP tournament after qualifying and beating Hrbaty in the final. He should be on the main tour competing more regularly in 2005 barring injuries.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

Re: Domino's Tagged Thread (OTW)

Nice thread!

I like the idea of having an age cut off.

And I like the people you listed.

It would be fun to list the junior finalists in the slams every year to see how they do the next year too.

Re: Domino's Tagged Thread (OTW)

Cool thread, Domino!
What about Mischa Zverev? As far as I know, he was born in Russia, but is now a naturalised German. Age 17, his ranking is in the 500s, but I've heard he's a good prospect

My German guys are like the cast of the Wizard of Oz:

Rainer = Lion
Kiwi = Scarecrow
Tommy = Tin Man
Flo = Dorothy

...but I still love 'em
