Which past players could have beaten peak Federer? (discuss matchup/mental aspects)

This a just to know which past players (open era only) would have had the game/mentality to trouble prime Federer on various surfaces. Assume the playing conditions to be similar to those present in 2003-2007 and all past players are equally at home on these surfaces ,playing with modern equipment and are close to their own peaks. We can just discuss potential match-up issues and things related to the mental side.

Personally , my list would be as follows:

Slow Hard courts: Agassi with his returns (did trouble peak fed in 2005 USO), maybe courier
Fast Hard : Sampras with his serves and volleys, maybe becker
Grass: - (I don't see sampras and other big servers regularly troubling Fed on 2003-2007 courts, he handles them well)
Clay: Borg(mental rock and heavy topspin), Guga( as he amply demonstrated in 2004), Bruguera with his massive topspin

I am not half as well informed about you people but this is my own list.Feel free to critique it and come up with yours.

All of them, anytime, anywhere, any surface. These guys aren't Davydenko, Hewitt, Phillippoussis, Fatbandian and Roddick.

RAFAEL NADAL

'Rafael Nadal is the best ever' - John McEnroe

1 AO - 9 RG - 2 W - 2 USO

Sampras was more than just a big serve tbf. He was second to Borg (maybe?) in the mental aspects of the game. Give him a quick grass court and he'd trouble Fed for sure.

Slow outdoor HC: Agassi and Nole

Plenty of clay specialists would, particularly the ones you mention in the OP.

Indoor/quicker HC - is there anyone?

Fatbandian beat him 8 times.

On HC: Agassi, Connors, Lendl, Mac
On grass: Sampras, Borg, Laver, Becker
On clay: Borg, Kuerten, Courier, Bruguera, Vilas and a few others.

Except Agassi eventually in one of 10 matches, i do genuinely believe none of them could.

But we've already had this discussion and it's more complicated than it looks.

Prime Sampras on grass definitely or any fast surface would be a handful for anyone including Roger. Obviously healthy Guga and other clay rabbits.

You have to be seriously vision impared to think Federer did not have something extraordinary to his game in his prime. Use youtube and see the footwork, improvisation ability and killing forehand he had back then. Maybe you'll learn something about the way tennis is supposed to be played.

30 year old declined Fed had the #1 ranking for a while in 2012, what do you think peak Fed would have done to this depth-less field? I'll tell you: exactly what he did in 04-07.
And yes, Nadal would still trouble him because of the for Roger very unlucky playing style matchup. But only on clay would Nadal dominate. Roger would still be #1.

Re: Which past players could have beaten peak Federer? (discuss matchup/mental aspect

Yet Safin, Hewitt, Roddick, Philippousis, Baghdatis, Gonzalez & Haas had a combined 2 Slams in 9 years. Gaudio grabbed his gift from Coria.
Nalby gave up after having a 6-2 lead against Federina at the French Open. Davydenko choked badly at the French Open and handed Nadal a nice goatofloserscake in the final.
Federina lost 18 Slams since 2005, when the weak clowns stopped winning and only Nalbandian & Roddick each nabbed 2 regular Masters titles in the last 7 years.

In the same year Fed destroyed Agassi at the AO, on a surface which in relative terms favoured Agassi more than the USO surface did. Over the long term, I wouldn't expect Agassi to greatly trouble peak Federer.

As for the other surfaces, the same idea applies. The odd loss aside, I wouldn't expect Federer to be troubled on any given surface by any player who wasn't able to go deep in the corresponding slam/s year after year.

Re: Which past players could have beaten peak Federer? (discuss matchup/mental aspect

Agassi had a 5 setter with Federer in 2004 USO. Agassi was constantly in pain & was injected with cortisone at age 34. Fed also was down 1-4 down in the 4th set of their '05 US Open final (where Roddick crashed out in the first round and Ginepri reached the semifinal).
