Brisbane R1 Nishikori(5) def. Matosevic 7-5 6-2

This wasn't good quality match but solid win for Kei

GL against Robredo or Harrison.

Marinko really needs more self belief but this was always going to be a tough matchup.

I come away from this match a little puzzled.

Did anyone else think Matosevic might be injured or something? He wasn't his normal self at all.

This isn't the kind of match he normally loses

What, you mean he doesn't lose to very good players.

It was Kei who had his arm worked on.

He doesn't lose to players of Kei's calibre usually, whether that's 'very good' or not is up to individual interpretation... I'll let you mull over that for a while.

Wow, seems like everybody like Nishikori. I have nothing against him but at one time every robot from the Bollettieri factory was hated more than the last one. Kind of interested in why he's so popular here

Yeah, cause we all know he beats top 20 players on a regular basis.

A few reasons:

Attacking. MTF does not take kindly to defensive players.

The game to beat 'big' players. Bagelling 2011 Djokovic was nice.

Doesn't seem to choke too much. He won his first title as an 18 year old back in 2008, beating world number 12 Blake in the final. If he was born 3 days later people would've taken even more notice as he would've been 90s generation.

MTF has pretty good sympathy towards injury, which has plagued Nishikori's career.

He's from a country that hasn't had top stars (in men's) before.

He's a nice guy!

Forgot about the Djokovic bagel Also forgot about beating Blake who probably still has some haters from his prime (if Robredo still has haters surely Blake does). Is he a nice guy? He doesn't seem to speak any English, maybe he hates all of us but can't say it

Good enough for me anyway, I think I'll put him on my tier 3 list of people to cheer for this AO.

All good points, except the one in bold. Ever heard of Michael Chang or Paradorn Srichaphan? I'm embarrassed for you.
