It's funny how Davis Cup makes tennis fans turn into tantrum-throwing kids who lose all objectivity. So if he makes a difficult choice for his career, that's equal to not caring at all? Why does it have to be all or nothing? Maybe he does care but just can't make his schedule work and decided to leave it off this year, rather than stretching himself too thin and never being able to give his best effort, neither to his own career nor to DC. Maybe he finds the situation with Nalby and Jaite unbearable.
Hasn't anyone here had to make a choice between two things -- and even though you wanted to have both, you were honest and realistic enough to know it wouldn't work and you would have to make a choice? Why do fans always moan "he doesn't care!"?
He can decide to play Davis Cup or not and that's he full desicion of course. But he cannot pretend that he is interested on playing it when he is not. And to be honest it has always been at the bottom of his priorities which is desicion. But he always seem to be doing a favour to Argentine association/fans etc... Call it in the way you want.
But in first place I don't find it nice that he always take it to a dirty ground if a captain has call him at an specific date or another, or if there's an specific player on the team or not, or if an specific tie is hold in an specific city or another one. He always has a reason to pull out of a tie or seems like he is doing a favour to the Argentine Davis cup team. You don't need to know all the previous drama performed by Del Potro before he decided to make it public that he was not going to play in Davis Cup in 2013. He just needs to be honest as Federer is and say it that Davis Cup is not in his agenda and that's all.
And secondly, maybe he shouldn't forget when he started to play tennis that the Argentine Association covered big part of his wages when he was a junior player. And when he made his first steps playing Future and Challenger events that were possible to be played because of the income that Argentine Association got consecuence of Argentine results in Davis Cup. I don't know where Canada get their income to produce new players but for Argentina Davis Cup means almost 90% of that budget.
The income that Davis Cup results produce is the one that allow Argentine Association to organize Future and Junior Events, give the chance to non rich junior players to get their first serious training first steps. Maybe Del Potro shouldn't forget that .
