Antibiotics dont work on viruses. They only prevent viral infection you already have to be complicated by another, bacterial disease .

Basically with virus you cant do anything to make you recover better or faster. You just can sit in your room (or in case of stomach bug - in bathroom), drink a lot, swallow pills which reduce fever and not to communicate much with outside world because this sucker virus is highly contagious.Using same bathroom or same dining room probably will infect all other family members.

It can last pretty badly a week or be over quite easily in 2 days, you never know. It is very individual.

That said, I also think there is more than virus in this story. Maybe mental problems, maybe knee, maybe even something more mysterious...Who knows, maybe he already played his last match as pro.( I doubt though he wants it to be Rosol-match, even if he will retire, he proably will play farewell match or tourney on clay )

In any case, he is not ready to play right now and Ferrer takes his place in seeding.

Big worry the H2H against Rosol. I predict that Nadal will never get a win over Rosol. The Rosol Mindfuck is forever!

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

Fantastic news. Now we won't be subjected to his filth tennis. Nice fabrication of some fake illness to spare himself the embarrasment of a humiliating defeat. Probably won't see him until the clay season when he can win by just running sideways forever and not have to demonstrate any skill with the racket.

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

This does make the RG draw very interesting, seeing as there is a chance of 3/4 Rafa will meet a fellow top 4-member there in the quarterfinals. Combined with Del Potro who will e lurking in the shadows and who knows, some others as well, we might be looking at the most interesting Roland Garros in years.

Depressing news. Health comes first but it's hard to get excited about tennis when Rafa's not around.

Good one!

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

And yet the fact remains Nadal will still probably triple bagel them all

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

guys, say whatever you want but this is sad. I'm not a Nadal fan (I like him tho) but I want to see him playing tennis again and being well. The only thing is I have this feeling that there is something else happening, but call it my paranoia.

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

he is playing too much poker on pokerstars.
seriously Nadal was not only one of the greatest players ever, but he also added something very special and unique to the game of tennis.
personally i loved watching him during the rallies and hated watching him between points. one pause and slow motion after another. Did he really need that much time to recover? Perhaps since he played points like no other in tennis ever.
It will be very sad to see him leave tennis. He will allways be very special.

This could very well be. Still, if ever there was a year Nadal is going to be vulnerable at RG, it will be this year. Was he not nursing an injury when he lost to Soderling?

Dont you worry, Nadal will be getting whoever is number 4 in the semi final. Toni will make sure of it

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

Tignor quite had the same reaction as Raging Lamb, lack of preparation because oif the virus only, not worrying much about his knee, maybe they are right, but anyway there will still be a lot of conjectures until, finally, he plays again ... maybe in Acapulco, but why not even in a claycourt tournament before Acapulco ?

Fed was nearly 28 when he won Roland-Garros, but yes from what I looked, it's not so common for a player to win a slam from 27 years old.

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

He knows that pre-slam prep requires that you A) get enough match time, and, B) stay healthy so that you can do A. I immediately thought the announcement bizarre, but I think if his camp wanted to lie, they could have claimed that his main problem is still his knees. Stomach viruses can knock you out for weeks. Big disappointment nevertheless.

That part is weird imho, how do they know he'll need a month to recover from virus? With such things sometimes you can suddenly feel as good as new after a short while, you would expect to wait for at least week or so and see how it's going, nobody throws away a slam because of a virus. Of course, he needs matches to prepare, but most of other players will only play an exo leading to AO, it's not like there's a masters going on right now.

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”
