Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

I will tell you what was the main aim of those long matches between
Rafa and Djokovic. To make ITF and ATP to change BO5 to BO3 in GS as they did after Rafa vs Fed five hours match in F at Rome 06. After this match they did not play at Hamburg and they were #1 and #2 top players then. So next year all finals of MS were changed to BO3.So this in interview at Wimbledon Fed was asked about this idea and he said no problem just make GSs to last a week not two two

Sad and strange. All the best for a full recovery, the sport needs him.

How about RG Fed vs Del Potro?

Nadal withdraws from Australian Open
Saturday, 29 December, 2012
By Tennis Australia

Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next month's Australian Open.

A stomach virus has plagued the Spanish superstar's preparation for the summer as he attempted to rejoin the tour for the first time since a mid-year knee injury.

Ironically, in the end it was the virus, and not the knee, that prompted his decision.

"I am sorry and very sad to announce that I will not play in the Australian Open," the 2009 Australian Open champion said. "My knee is coming along okay, but a stomach virus has left me unable to get ready in time to tackle the rigours of a Grand Slam.

"Because of the virus, I have been unable to get any match practice and simply would not be doing myself or my friends in Australia justice if I went down there so unprepared. You need your body to be at its best for the Australian Open," Nadal said.

"It was a difficult decision and I am extremely disappointed to be missing such a great event. I love coming to Melbourne and playing on Rod Laver Arena before the Australian crowds. It brings out the best in me. It hurts to have to wait another 12 months before I get another chance. In the meantime, the focus is now on desperately trying to get back on the tour."

Nadal was originally due to play his first matches since the surgery in Abu Dhabi followed by an event in Doha. The virus has meant he has had to withdraw from both, thus depriving him of match practice and no doubt playing a large part in his decision to withdraw.

"It is completely understandable and we really feel disappointed for him," Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said. "But without any match practice and without sufficient lead up time on the practice court, it makes it virtually impossible for him to get his body ready.

"We just hope he gets better quickly and we see him back on the tour as soon as possible. Tennis fans across the world have been missing him. Our Australian Open staff will very much miss him and his team as he is not only a great player, but also a great guy with good people around him,"explained Tiley who has been in regular contact with the Nadal camp in recent weeks.

"We wish Rafa all the best. I am confident we will see him back on the tour soon and back in Australia for 2014, no doubt as one of the contenders for the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup."
What surgery?

Sad news. Hope he can be back to retain the French Open. Oh, and some more time to grind at the poker tables.

Who cares what it is...he's not playing!! He's not coming back unless he thinks he has a great chance to win. Why would he??

fish and nalbandian are still in, btw
they're expected to withdraw, but have not done it yet

zopp's withdrawal moved levine into the md
roddick's withdrawal moved stakhovsky

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

Why's Nadal a coward? He had a history of cramping & immobility while he practiced on hardcourt.
He stiffened up at the US Open, even at the press conference.
He reached the final there. Federina did not.
Maybe Federina forgot that his opponent wasn't hurt?

Should he demolish Federer everywhere to prove to Federinatards he is a warrior like Federina? It's better to wait for a good comeback than show up fast with horrid efforts such as the many Federer losses to him. Then again, he could play & cry about his head to head record too. oh, wait.

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

sad and strange.
i'm not prepared to dismiss the official story so easily. a strong stomach virus can sometimes really exhaust one to the point that one needs a week to recover to normal state, let alone start practicing.
sans the knees, he could have probably shrugged it off, but i can understand why an exhausted player with his knee still tender might decide to skip it.

first 2 sets - Fed-Nole 7-6 6-4
first 2 sets - Dull-Nole 2-6 4-6

no one was a tougher opponent for 2011 Nole than Fedgod was, certainly wasnt dull, who got bageled 6-0 in matches that year

and the Maestro still hasnt retired in 1,076 career matches!

just admit that the artful Roger amazes you like the rest of us.
