When was the last time someone skipped a major nearly three weeks in advance because of a virus?

Heya is a legend

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

This means he will be 6th or 7th going into clay season (if he misses the complete HC season) and, if he slips up anywhere on clay, possibly 7th or 8th into RG / Wimbledon.

Crazy. He might not be able to pull out mentally with such a fall. Let's wait and see.

I'm not saying it's not the knees. But, when's the last time someone got a virus right before their first tune up before a major, after not having played for almost 7 months?

Something bad or sinister is at play here.
I am not a doctor but I learned antibiotics do not work on virus. Antibiotic is used on bacterial infection.

I would expect the opposite, because he is an athlete so i thought he will recover faster but im not a doctor and i have 0 Physiological knowledge

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

If its the same stomach virus that I contracted about 10 days ago then I can sort of understand the decision. This is pretty nasty and doesn't seem to just go away like most stomach viruses do. So he can't play Doha. The decision not to play the AO is probably more about not wanting to play a GS without ANY match practice in more than half a year. Understandable, I guess.

Proud fan of Olderer, the GOAT.

I'm not an MD either. But I think it's one thing to recover enough to get back to an office job, and quite another to recover enough to get back to playing a pro sport where your body is taxed to its limits.

That's right Lee.
Sorry about that horrible virus BlueSwan, I had some bad cold virus for 2 weeks that didn't want to go away either, probably bc my immune system is weakened.

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

I am afraid Djokovic can be next one to pay the price because his style of play is the same as Nadal.Sliding, spliting on those hard courts soon or late your body will play the price. Why do not they
speed up the courts so their matches would not last five or six hours. It is just not fair to players, fans.

Re: Nadal OUT of the Australian Open

At least it's not mono. It'd be foolish for him to play Tipsarevic and lose to Djoker due to severe slowness. Excuses don't need to change depending on an Aussie Open loss and a clay title win a few weeks later.

Almost seven months is a stretch. It will be exactly six months tomorrow.

Nole never had any leg or knee problems; and Ferrer is four years older than Nadal, runs a lot and plays many grueling rallies, yet just had the best season of his career.

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”
