Advancements in technology and the slowing down of all surfaces has made this possible with grueling rally after grueling rally dishing out punishment a human body cannot consistently take without breaking down. It's sad really.
Yes it's sad but that was what allowed nadal to win much more than he would've if the surfaces hadn't been homogeneised.
