Federer: Del Potro has the potential to become world no.1

http://www.espn.co.uk/tennis/sport/story/183704.html

Not the first time he says this either. Discuss.

Fed is just being diplomatic. He's in Argentina, he's playing exho with him and so on. Del Potro has a chance but I doubt it will happen.

His fitness is the problem, he lacks of consistent thanks to his awful fitness so I doubt it.

Roger just being polite in Argentina. Doubt that DP will ever reach #1. His h2h with both Djokovic and Murray is horrendous. He beat Rafa 3 times back in 2009 but lost last 4 matches they played. He is simply too inconsistent. He has never won any master 1000. It takes much more to reach #1. I just don't see it happening. I like DP btw.

Re: Federer: Del Potro has the potential to become world no.1

Sounds too vague imho, what does it mean even? Del Po is a top 10 player and won a slam, so he's good of course, but the whole statement is too much "maybe it will rain or maybe it will be sunny"

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

Re: Federer: Del Potro has the potential to become world no.1

It is obvious he has the potential. He certainly was perhaps moving towards a very solid ranking after 2009, but while the injury obviously affect his form most notably the serve which he improved tremendously to win the USO 2009, it has mainly affected his mental game. He has got some of his mojo back, but still not good enough for the slams at the moment. But as far as everything, he has it, although he still needs to improve on that serve to reach the 2009 level, but I think things like his fitness are underrated. Ironically, he seemed more fresh than Federer when they both played for medals after their epic in London this year.

However, no matter what, I don't think he could ever be a dominating number 1 player.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

Re: Federer: Del Potro has the potential to become world no.1

Many players throughout the history of the sport have had the potential to become the best. Few have actually achieved it.

So yeah, this seems like a rather obvious thing to say about someone who has already won a major, and beaten two of the best players ever in the process.

My guess is Federer didn't actually commit to more than citing his potential.

Inconsistent? 3 QFs and a 4th RD appearance at the slams this year is inconsistent? The only real issue for Del Potro, is comically Ferrer. Yes, Murray and Djokovic will cause problems for him in the long run as their games force Del Potro to be unrelenting which can be tough when he is lacking confidence, but he has shown when a match is on the line he can beat anyone. There is on doubt a draw like the USO 2009 will open up, and with all these big hitters some days they just catch fire and there is nothing a player can do. Just like with Novak, Andy, Roger and Rafa he just needs a little fortune to play on his side first.

Re: Federer: Del Potro has the potential to become world no.1

I love DelPo but I'm just not sure if it will happen, it's too hard to predict.

Fed might seem to be being kind, but fed is physic! He predicted Murray would win a slam after beating him in Wimbledon Final, and Murray did win a slam 2/3 months latter.

Mark Lenders banged your girlfriend, I'm sorry to tell you that mate.

that will not bring him #1 ranking,3 major QF and 4th round appearance, not good enough ... he hasn't win anything since his maiden slam. I'm just being objective. the top 4 are regularly reaching semis and finals at slams and masters. DP does not. even if he wins another major, but can't go deep or win masters he'll never become #1. it's very simple. he is not as consistent as Nole, Fed, Rafa or Murray. he doesn't have any results to show.
