Re: Challenge: Predict the Top 8 of 2013 !

So far, 39 people picked. Here is the overall MTF predicted rankings so far.

1-Djokovic (picked by 29 people)

2-Murray (19)

3-Federer (15)

4-Nadal (13) - Federer was the most selected with 14 but he's already #3

5-Del Potro (17)

6-Berdych (10) - Ferrer has 10 selections too but Berdych has more selections for #5 so edge to him.

7-Ferrer (13) - Berdych has 14 but he's already #4.

8-Tsonga (16)

The most consensual pick is by far Nole for #1 followed by Delpo #5, no one comes even within 10 picks off them for their respective position.

The current top 4 were the only ones chosen in all 39 votes in the top 8, with Delpo picked 38 times. Nadal and Delpo had multiple picks for the most different positions: Delpo - 3 picks for #2, 3 for #3, 7 for #4, 17 for #5, 7 for #6, 2 for #7. Nadal - 3 for #1, 7 for #2, 10 for #3, 13 for #4, 4 for #5, 2 for #6.

Eh why?

He got 1 pick for #3, 5 for #5, 10 for #6, 14 for #7, 5 for #8.

Most people seem to believe he will be either #6 or #7, sounds rather reasonable given his level of play and ranking over the past few years.

Sounds reasonable. Although I think Fed will end up 4 or 5 this year given he is going to play less tournaments and Nadal will be a bit rusty at the beginning of the season.

The problem is that unless their decline is absolutely massive or they have an extremely long injury spell, only a Del Potro with no health issues for an entire year can threaten their top 4 position in any way - there are more players capable of beating them of course, but not of being consistent enough to overtake them. And we know Del Potro staying healthy isn't exactly a very likely scenario, so Federer and Nadal look likely to keep their ranking even with less tournaments in their schedule and rust.

With that said, Nadal will be in danger if he can't be in form for the clay season, and Federer can hit a significant decline at any time given his age, but they're still safe bets.

It's perfectly reasonable predicting Fed at number 4,5 or 6, but not because of this argument !

From the tournaments Fed will not play in 2013 that he played in 2012, he got only 45 points from Miami and 300 from Basel ! Doha was not-countable.

And if he doesn't play Basel, he will play Paris instead !

And Miami is not a good tournament for him at all.

Some have created that other "vulture" nonsense that Fed got a lot of points because of playing many tournaments in 2012 ... it's not true at all ! he played more matches than previous years, that is true, but ... only because he won more matches !

For the vulture-theorists who made a big deal of Fed playing Rotterdam and Dubai, Fed still has Rotterdam and Dubai in his calendar in 2013 (he also had Dubai in previous years but just several times could not play because of illness, which is not good either). And Halle as well.

I'm always astonished about the convincing power of that vulture theory Very few people in this forum look at rankings more than me, and I know how stupid this is ... except for players who play challengers.

useless old guy

Yeah back when Berdych was even more useless than he is now. Last 3 years Berdych leads 4-3.
