In terms of level of play Nadal was way above the competition. Had he continued the year healthy he surely would've had the best year. He's not the best player of the year because he didn't play half of it. Best Player of January-June then sure. He was playing the best tennis before he was injured though.
He was above the competition in Rome and RG, that was it.
AO - beat Fed with his usual tacs, and then lost the final which admittedly could have fallen to his side but the performance itself wouldn't put him above the rest of the top players.
IW - lost to Fed after almost losing to Nalbandian.
Miami - got out with injury, we can't know what would have happened, so will be out of the equation.
MC - didn't face a top 8 until the final where he met Novak whose grandfather had just died.
Barcelona - won it but was outplayed by Ferrer (that talent God).
Madrid - slippery surface, lost after being in a good winning position.
Rome - played amazing and gave the competition no chance.
RG - played amazing and gave the competition no chance.
All in all, I put him above Roger and Novak in that period but not by much considering it's his best part of the tennis season.
