Del Po hits extremely hard though with a lot of speed. And while he does play the high percentage plays a lot, his game is still mostly power-orientated whereas I found Agassi's game more technique-orientated.

Yes, he was. He had the carisma, the style and a much more enjoyable game. Few tennis players were as popular as him. Before he turned 20 he was making advertisings for all sort of brands.

Of course Pete was very popular too, but considering his achievements he wasn't very popular (any guy with 14 slams and 6 year end number 1 would be popular).

If you see it more lately, it's probably because younger generations and newer fans can identify and appreciate Agassi more since he played well into the 2000's.

More than that, though, he was much more charismatic and engaging than Pete was. Resultantly, sponsorships were all over him for his marketability.

Personally, I watched some tennis in the 90's with my mother, and I was drawn to Agassi way more than Sampras. The former was just a lot more exciting.

Good to hear, I actually didn't think so.
I like Agassi way better than Pete myself.

Re: Did Agassi have more fans than Sampras?

In the 90s there were many casual fans who loved Agassi but didn't care about any of the other players including Sampras. Agassi was the guy who drove TV ratings and made many fans want to buy tickets to events.

Even when he was playing in challenger tournaments in 1997, there were still fans coming to see him and even dressing like him.

Check out Sampras's TV ratings for many of his big matches against opponents not named Agassi. They weren't great at all.

Sampras always believed in letting his racket do the talking, and wasn't interested in the media work and promotional activities. However tennis is not a mainstream sport, it is a relatively niche and minority one. It always needs its best players to take some time out to promote it and try and spread it to the masses as much as possible. Sampras didn't really understand that but guys like Agassi and Federer did/do.

Agassi is mentally insane. He belongs in a mental hospital behind bars not in the public.

Exactly. I'd say Federer and Agassi are with Borg the most popular tennis players.

Re: Did Agassi have more fans than Sampras?

As others have said Agassi was/is way more popular.During his career he developped some kind of unique interaction with crowds. No matter where he was playing and who was the opponent, the crowd was generally on his side. And he was the main reason many kids wanted to play tennis. They grew up wanted to be/play like him.No one grew up wanting to be Sampras

Re: Did Agassi have more fans than Sampras?

Agassi was a 'rebel' during his early years and people seemed to like that. There was hoopla about whether he was going to wear white at Wimbledon because his outfits were colourful at the time. Dating an actress and being from Las Vegas also helped develop his rock star image. People who grew up liking him in the early 90s seemed to stick with him as he matured in the 2000s. People who knew nothing about tennis still knew who Andre Agassi was.

Re: Did Agassi have more fans than Sampras?

Also, I'd hardly call Agassi a ball-basher. In his early years, perhaps, but as he matured, his game did as well. I'd call him an aggressive baseliner or ball-striker more than anything else.

Positioning was such a key aspect of Agassi's game. The guy hugged the baseline so well, through serve, return, and everything afterward. This facilitated his effort to dictate points while maintaining very minimal movement himself. In doing so, he could construct points in a way that your typical ball-bashers couldn't.

Re: Did Agassi have more fans than Sampras?

Agassi was more popular than Sampras, but Sampras was way more successful and a better player.

If i had a choice to trade places with one of them, it would be Sampras.
