Best player never to win Masters title

While watching final today I heard from commentator that David is probably the best player never to win a Masters. Now that gap is fulfilled. Then... who is it?

And Kafelnikov doesn`t count, Delpo too.

I think that`s unfair to include players from 70th and 80th into discussion as only cince 1990 we had more or less stable calendar speaking about Masters, they became mandatory and so on.

Blake, maybe? Or Fernando?

Gasquet is next №1

If you also exclude slam and WTF winners, Fernando Gonzalez is my pick.

He was a beast when he was on. Should've won the 2004 Us Open though.

Re: Best player never to win Masters title

why does kafelnikov not count?

2 grand slams, olympic gold medals

he is probably the most decorated player without a masters title

in the 90s/00s anyway

He lost in straight sets to the eventual FINALIST, yet he should've won???

Re: Best player never to win Masters title

The question is probably only meaningfull when mentioning players who have not won titles at a high level e.g. grand slam.

The current greatness league of active players in order of achievements to date (a factual comparison rather than fan biased assessment):

Federer 17 GS, 6 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.
Nadal 14 GS, 27 Master Series, 1 Olympic Gold.
Djokovic 9 GS, 4 Year End Masters, 24 Master Series.

Fernando who? Gonzalez? He's a contender.

There's the likes of Gaudio, J.Johannson, maybe the likes of Magnus Larsson.

Re: Best player never to win Masters title

If i understand correctly you mean best player that never won anything bigger tha 500 level tournamen yes? that´s why Delpo and Kafelnikov don´t count right?

So i think than Gonzalez is good pick, like someone mentioned, from current top players - Tipsy is higher ranked player without Master 1000 if we don´t count Delpo with slam of course.

So than we have guys like Almagro, Gasquet,, Monaco, RAonic, Isner,Simon, Wawrinka,Dolgo so on - from those guys some will have chance in future - for example Raonic or Nishikori should win in future eventually - so maybe Gasquet and Wawrinka would deserve it most from players without Master 1000, but on other hand i don´t think there are good enough. Right now i don´t think there is player that deserve to have at least 1x Master 1000 in his career - by Ferrer it was o.k. this guy is good, top 5 and no Masters, but by another guys there are just good, but you won´t say give them MAster1000 they deserve it

So what ? Don't forget that he beat Nadal in his comeback tournament after multiple injuries.

Such a shame that he was a headcase. If not, he would've won Us Open.

BTW, Ancic is also one of the best never to win a masters.

There are more successful players who had the luxury of playing for longer periods through good health, but it's not clear as to whether they were better players than Joachim Johansson.

Don't pretend to know what you're talking about, you were in nappies during the short period where Johansson was fit.

Re: Best player never to win Masters title

The same it was before today: Kafelnikov, followed by Del Potro.

Honorable mention for Ancic, who was robbed of Hamburg 2006 by cheating Boredo and had the talent to win many of these if his career hadn't been cut short so tragically.

As for worst Masters winners, Boredo and Ferrer by far.

Plus, if JJ was fit, they would form one of the most dangerous duals with Soderling. At least 1 davis cup title would be on the cards.
