Wow, haven't posted on MTF in ages. Anyhow, thread title is pretty clear. Which players' first tour titles were Masters titles? Or how about a first title being a slam?

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins...

Roberto 'the one-tournament wonder' Carretero comes to mind.

Wait are you talking about first title or only title?

You experts of tennis lore, you. Would Carretero be the most recent first time titlist at a Masters?

First title, but only title is a fun bit of trivia too.

Cool. Thanks for the reply. How about excluding the AO before 1982? Top players didn't really start playing the AO until then, so the prestige is somewhat diminished in retrospect.

Kuerten's first title was a slam.
Wilander's first title was a slam.
Chang's second :[ title was a slam.

Interestingly all were at Roland Garros.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

Re: Has any player's first title been a Masters? Or how about a slam?

Clay definitely seems to be the surface that comes with all these answers. Carretero at Hamburg, Guga, Chang, and Wilander at RG. How about a non-clay Masters or Slam first time titlist? (Excluding AO pre-1982) I know, the question is growing more and more complicated. Becker maybe? But I think he won a title or two before Wimbledon.

Becker won Queens before Wimbledon and Sampras won his first two titles the same summer he won USO. Courier won a smaller event, then the IW/Miami double then Roland Garros. Those are the closest for non-RG that fit OP's questions that I can think of.
