Matosevic #1 Australian (dethrones Tomic)

With his first round win in Basel, Marinko Matosevic will overtake Bernard Tomic as the number one Aussie when the new ATP rankings are released this coming Monday. (http://live-tennis.eu/)

The funny thing is that most of the Australian public have never heard of Matosevic, and it will be interesting to see how the Australian media handle the situation in January.

Congratulations Matosevic!

Hopefully he stays ahead of Tomic by the time the AO comes, just to see the reactions.

Looks likely as Tomic is defending 90 points in Brisbane and Matosevic nothing until February.

Epic Congrats and hopefully he gets kind draw at AO

“There’s so many athletes, tennis players around the world,” he continued, trying to put his life into some kind of perspective, “they want to be the best in what they do. They want to succeed. Many of them, they don’t succeed in the end. I’m fortunate to have this opportunity and succeed.”

Good work Marinko. Vastly scathed by people on here, he's had a great, consistent year.

Haha, I woke up having to search to see whether Marinko had won or not.

Needless to say, he will become alot more famous come January. Channel 7 will pump him up. Outside the 200 to top 50 this year. What a great story for him.

Hewitt, even now, even with his ranking, is Australia's best. Matosevic and Ebden are just non-factors in big events. Hewitt can still produce the juice from time to time.

Tomic's career is over I'm afraid. Just a flash in the pan.

Re: Matosevic #1 Australian (dethrones Tomic)

Matosevic was given nothing at all from TA, started playing the game at an advanced age and got there from sheer determination unlike more talented players.

He said when he won the AO wildcard playoff last year, if he was playing this again then he'd have to think about his career.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

You know you're tennis program is in shambles when...

Nothing against Matosevic, he's worked hard to get where he is and deserves it, but for a country with a tennis history such as Australia's having Matosevic as your highest ranked player is not good

Australian tennis is in good hands. With titans like Clowntosevic, Crapden and Tomug the stage is set for Aussie domination at slams next year Only Donald Young has enough game to spoil the party

He also took Cilic to 5 sets at the US OPEN. I would bank on him to win a round or two at the AUS OPEN. (With an adequate draw)
