Berdych and the race to YE nr 5

Earlier in the year i was certain that Berdych would battle with Murray for nr 4 well we can forget that now since Murray had a great olympics won 1st Slam etc..

Though Tomas has a great chance to make nr 5 year end. Ferrer is out of form and Tomas is in 1/2 in Shanghai and only 700 points behind Ferrer and the surface for the rest of 2012 favors Tomas.

Also the debate about Tsonga being the real Nr 5 can be put to rest for a while. Tsonga is barely hanging on to top 8 in the world.

With Soda away and Delpo consistent injured i guess Tomas is the only contender ATM together with Ferrer for nr 5 considering he is way better on Clay compared to Tsonga and more consistent overall imo.

Re: Berdych and the race to YE nr 5

Berdych will be solid #6, but number 5 will be out of reach for him.

Why , he will make much more of the rest of 2012 compared to Ferrer?!

Re: Berdych and the race to YE nr 5

That loss in R4 of RG really hurt Berdie. He probably stood a very good chance against Roger in Paris.

As for YE #5, I think his ability to choke to the active top 4 will be his undoing. He won't come out of the groups.

Isn't Ferrer still a fair way ahead of him? The Valencia points Ferrer will pick up will help, too.

Re: Berdych and the race to YE nr 5

I'm not sure he will. Ferrer will have only Federer OR Djokovic in his group in WTF out of the big guns, while Berdych might get Murray as well. This is not Ferrer's best surface but he is consistent everywhere, and IMO he is also the better player. Look I'm not ruling Berdych out for #5, but I predict Ferrer to stay strong at his position.

It'll be hard considering Ferrer will be 4th seed in Paris and London assuming Nadal doesn't play. But yeah it's still more than a possibility he could end as No.5, no where near impossible.

Yeah we will see what shape Ferrer is in when he returns. We have a battle anyway, Berdych def Nole would help him

Re: Berdych and the race to YE nr 5

Anyway, I'm very glad that Berdych is proving to be more successful then Delpo and Tsonga. He deserves it as he is the better player.

Re: Berdych and the race to YE nr 5

Berdych is imo the most worthy #5 since Soderling left the spot with his illness. I mean no offense to the vult....I mean Ferrer, he's a very likeable person, but I don't think he was #5 in terms of threat to the top4.

The #5 player should be the player that the top4 fans go "oh noes!" when their favourite gets him in the quarter. It's been like that with Berdych and he's already proven that many times. Berdych can step up and take a game into his own hands.

#5 shouldn't be a player who feels like a bye in QF/SF situations of slams. #5 should be a player that comes knocking to replace #4 in the rankings if #4 slips up just for part of the season!

Truth to be told I think Berdych got it in him to reach more slam finals and win M1000s and then he could aim to also break the top4. That is out of reach for players who can't reach big finals or win big tournaments. Let's be honest, just winning 500s/250s aren't gonna cut it for top4 most likely.

I hope Berdych will make #5 before year-end but regardless it's gonna be interesting to see him in the WTF this year. Indoor conditions with no wind and his current form makes him a very deadly opponent that could win the whole thing.

Tennis is played against the field, not just against the top 4. (Who am I quoting? )
And Ferrer has been the best overall out of the 5-8 players. QF, SF, QF, SF. Enough said. Ferrer is the 5th best player in the world.

Re: Berdych and the race to YE nr 5

Ferrer deserves his 5 spot so far this year and was very competitive against Murray in W, great match.

I do agree that Tomas is a bigger threat to top 4 guys. That goes for Tsonga and Delpo offcourse aswell.

The fact that Vulrrer is ahead of an offensive-minded and attacking player like Berdych is horrible for the game

No the point isn't #5 and somehow protecting #5. The point is going higher. For Ferrer #5 is definitely the peak unless someone ahead of him simply is gone a long time or retires.

Ferrer would never have reached #5 in the first place unless Soderling got his problems during 2011. Del Potro has been ahead of Murray by his own power. Söderling also by his own power reaching a slam final, winning a M1000 and then bumping down Murray for months.

Ferrer has never won a M1000. He has never reached a slam final.

When there is a WWW thread between Federer and Ferrer there's like 95% saying Federer. When it's Federer vs Berdych even the fedfans themselves sometimes vote Berdych. That says something when Federer is considered GOAT and Berdych has beaten him twice in slams. Ferrer has never beaten Federer even in a 500 or M1000, much less a slam.

So I mean who are we kidding here? He is also younger so we might not even seen the best of Berdych yet. He's still improving imo.
