Nadal is history and Federer is near retirement so the sky is the limit for Djokovic. Soon an unreliable Murray will be the only competition. Djokovic might even have a chance of catching Federer's total provided he doesn't get bored with winning everything.

Re: How many slams do you think Djokovic will win overall?

Between 9-11. To get to 9 he needs 4 more - unless he gets the CYGS next year that won't happen till at least 2014. Even then he needs 3 in one season or 2 in both 2013 and 2014. Not as easy as it sounds given that he's played pretty great this year but still only won 1. By 2015 he will be 28 - not ancient by any means but a long time given he won his first slam in 2008. Basically I think the next 2-3 seasons are his key time. Hard to assess but double digits would be great if he gets there.

Will also depend on consistency of Murray and how much of a fight Del Potro puts up. Not to mention Nadal - even in his worst years he's won a slam - may well come back to win RG next year and will continue to be a threat. Has also said he hopes to play till 2016 - we'll see if it happens but basically the key rivals - Nadal and Murray - aren't really disappearing...

Ha! Let Murray win his FIRST slam, then we'll talk about him winning multiple slams.

Is this under the "Slams don't count if Nadal is not in the draw"-category?

Re: How many slams do you think Djokovic will win overall?

Djokovic will not reach double digits. He is not following the same career trajectory of Borg, Sampras, Federer and Nadal. These 4 players at one stage of their careers were 10-2 in slam finals.

Djokovic is 5-4 in slam finals so his career trajectory is more similar to Agassi's who ended up with an 8-7 record in slam finals.

With just 5 slams, Djokovic has already lost 4 slam finals. That's too much. Djokovic is winning almost as many slam finals as he is losing. Borg, Sampras, Federer and Nadal only went on to lose their 4th slam final when they all had already won 10+ slams.

Borg had already won 11 slams, Sampras had already won 13 slams, Federer had already won 12 slams and Nadal had already won 10 slams when they lost their 4th slam final.

Hey Looner, care to explain why you think Novak isn't able to win 14 Slams? You, as a Federer fan, should know that players today can last until 30+ years of age, so after Roger retires and Rafa declines, Novak will have to fight for the Slams with Andy Murray or Juan Martin del Potro and players like Tomic and Dimitrov. As I can totally see him winning Slams until he's 30+. So let's say 2 more 2 Slam seasons and 4 more 1 Slam seasons get us to 13. +1 somewhere down the line. I think that's realistic, but I would be delighted to hear your respected opinion and why you think that's not realistic.

Re: How many slams do you think Djokovic will win overall?

Roger won his penultimate slam when he was 28. That is not 30 or 31 or 32. It is 28 and he was a 'young' 28-year-old (28 and 5 months). So, I don't think Djoker can go on multiple slam winning streaks for years to come. He is 25 this year and has possibly 2 good and 1 OKish year to win slams. I don't see him winning more than 1.5-2 slams on average per year for those 3, so a total around 10 at most is more likely.

However, he doesn't have a slam where he's untouchable. The AO surface suits him and favours his playign style but Murray can get him there. So can Nadal and a very in-form Federer. I just don't see him winning as many slams as you all think he will win.

Even if the next generation suck, if he 'declines' to his 2009 level, he can just lose to Kohlschreibers, etc. in the channel slams. If he wants to win 10 or more slams, he needs to keep improving his serve and its consistency and bring some attacking FHs to his game once again.

7-9 at most, and yes I'm being courtagious and even more, serious.
Things may well change bloody fast in tennis and results from the past do not form any guarantee for the future. Neither does a past result from certain other players.

You are all welcome to come back and mock me should I eventually turn out being wrong.
