Will Federer keep his 2012 losses in single-digits?

So far in 2012, Federer is 61-8. Can he do another season with single-digits losses? He achieved this four (consecutive!!) times in his career:

2004: 74-6
2005: 81-4
2006: 92-5
2007: 68-9

This is an extremely difficult thing to achieve (unless you play very little on the tour all year long and end up with a 4-8 record, of course! ). For example Nadal never managed to do that in his entire career (closest was 71-10 in 2010 and 75-10 in 2005. This year he is actually 42-6, but since he missed half the year almost (and it is that part of the year when historically he loses quite a bit more often then the rest of the year) I don't think we should count it). So in recent memory the only one besides Federer to do it was Djokovic last year, I believe (he was 70-6). So, my question is: Will Federer do it again? How many losses will he have accumulated by the end of the year? What do you think?

I believe he will end with 10 losses, so my answer is "no" - I think he will lose in Shanghai, win in Basel, skip Paris, win WTF but loses one match in the group phase.

Re: Will Federer keep his 2012 losses in single-digits?

Federer is playing Shanghai, Basel and London (imo he skips Paris for sure). Really, I don´t know. He may lose in Shanghai and then not lose in Basel and WTF.

Or he might win Shanghai and Basel, maybe London too - but frankly, I don´t think so. It all depends what kind of Federer will play indoor season - JesusFed (answer is yes) or Shankerer (no).

Roger Federer - Martin Klizan - Lukas Lacko - Milos Raonic - Fernando Verdasco

Dustin Brown - Nick Kyrgios - Norbert Gombos - Stanislas Wawrinka - Dominic Thiem

I'm gonna stay on the safe side and say he loses a WTF match as well as Shanghai.

If he wins Shanghai, then definitely yes.
If not, then 50/50.

Re: Will Federer keep his 2012 losses in single-digits?

It is indeed a rare thing to achieve. Sampras only managed it once, and then - like Nadal this year - with an abbreviated season, in 1999 with 40-8. Federer and Djokovic are the only ones to manage with more than 50 matches played since Andre Agassi went 73-9 in 1995. Ivan Lendl managed a total of five times - 1982, 1985-7 and 1989 (in 1988 he was 41-8) so this is the record Federer is trying to equal now. Will he do it? Unfortunately, I think not. But I hope I'm wrong.

Re: Will Federer keep his 2012 losses in single-digits?

I think he can. If he wins Shanghai (probably the most difficult one) and Basel, he should be able to. Even if he doesn't, it has been a stellar season anyway. However, if he does not lose more than 1 match until the end of year, it means he'll have a better record than in 2007 .

Great contributions to debate there. Just put "Olderer/Noserer forum" in your signatures: it would save you guys a little wasted energy.

Father time catching up with Federer (...where have we heard that before?!), so no, I don't think he'll only lose once more this year. I see him picking u one more title though. WTF would be the best for him...
