Outside of slams, sure. But in grand slams it's completely different. Look at Del Potro's record and then Murray's - there's a world of difference.

And Nishikori's game is not physical? Nishikori is getting loads of free points off his serve? Yea, I think in 5 years they will still be around. Nadal too if can fix his knees.

Re: Nishikori will win a slam

It's not as if Nishikori is losing solely to the top 4 guys. He can be brought down by a lot of players, so I just don't see him winning a slam. If Tsonga hasn't done it, I don't see him doing it. May be wrong but it'll be unlikely.

The real question is: would the thread title have been 'Raonic will win a slam' if he had won the final earlier today?

It just depends whether Nishikori can stay consistent, as well as being injury free. I'm pretty optimistic about his future after Tokyo, because if he can keep up that high level of play from now onwards, he will certainly be dangerous for years to come. He reminds me of Davydenko with that "playstation" sort of play. Who knows. He could be the next "Davydenko", but one who can win a slam one day.

Tsonga's just unlucky that he was born playing this Fedalovic era. He'd win slams for sure if he was playing in a future era.

In order to win slam he must improve a lot more of his power and serve.

Nishikori played well this time last year too, semis in Shanghai and F in Basel, but he didn't build too much on that.

Yes he had great results, but I didn't really think the quality of his tennis was that good... well not compared to Tokyo anyway. Around that time last year, he was nowhere near that kind of form he showed there.

I mean come on... In Shanghai, he almost got blown off the court by Haase (think he trailed like 0-6, 1-4 before Haase mugged it up badly), not to mention struggles against Giraldo, then finally getting smoked by Murray. To be honest, I felt that he BS'ed his way to the SF anyway, but it was a good result for him. In Basel, he struggled against Kukushkin , and he got pretty fortunate against an ailing Nole. I'm pretty certain that Kei's form at the moment wouldn't allow him to struggle like that. But oh well. The question is, can he keep up his "new and improved" form?

Well, let's see how it's going to be against more experienced guys, getting Raonic here and not Murray was pretty lucky.

To be fair, he probably matches up well against Raonic because Kei plays fast and takes the timing away from the big guy. But come on, give him some credit. Bar his early round matches, he played tennis at a level that I have never seen from him before. It's not like Berdych, Baghdatis and Raonic aren't decent and/or "experienced" players to beat en route to a 500 title. If Murray wasn't good enough to even reach the final to face Kei, then that's too bad for him.

Re: Nishikori will win a slam

No-one but Federer and Nadal and Djokovic will ever win a slam. Ever. Even when they retire.

Sorry, but I just don't have the imagination to see anyone else holding a slam trophy over their heads.

Certainly not Raonic, Nishikori, Tomic, Harrison, Dolgopolov...et al...etc...

I hope so, I really do. I think it's premature though, on the basis of a 500 event win.
