yes, winning is all that matters, and that's why Djokovic is clearly leading the race this year. He outperformed Federer in 2012 overall. He did better at slams than Fed reaching 2F, 1SF and 1W, vs. Roger 1W, 2SF, 1QF. Numbers do not lie.
Race 2012

1 Djokovic, Novak (SRB) 9,910 0 13
2 Federer, Roger (SUI) 8,920 0 16

also, pay attention. Djokovic played only 13 tournaments, Fed played 16. That gap will get even bigger because Djokovic is gaining points in Beijing (he didn't play there last year), plus has only something like 600 points to defend vs. Roger's 3000.

so, I hope this helps too. not sure if you are being serious in your posts btw.

Pay attention, he says, and comes up with the wrong numbers. Djokovic played 13, Federer played 14 + DC. DC doesn't give many points, does it? The tournaments Djokovic played has a maximum point score of 16250 (not including Beijing) while Federer's has 15500.

Djokovic is better so far in 2012 but not by enough to decide already who has the best season.

Fed played 14 ones + Davis cup : the ATP counts mandatory tournaments unplayed in the number of tournaments, which means that they counted the unplayed Toronto among your "16". As for Davis cup, it has no impact at all on ATP points, and Fed will not count Doha as well if he does better in Basel whereas Djokovic will count all of his results.

In the end, Fed will probably count 15 results (4 slams+6 mandatory MS1000+Olympics+Dubai+Rotterdam+Basel+Halle) as he will probably not play Bercy.
Djokovic will probably count 16 results (4 slams+8 mandatory MS1000including Toronto+Bercy+Monte-Carlo+Beijing+Olympics+Dubai) as he will probably play Bercy as he will not play Basel/Valencia.

PS : Sorry, just realized Litotes had posted the same, although I explained other points

excuse me but these are official numbers from the ATP site, and yes you can look at it as 14 plus DC if you wish. Djokovic outperformed Fed this year fair and square. Your maximum potential point score is kinda silly, because Djokovic has won more points than Fed this year playing less even if we don't count DC. Is that so hard to understand? My point stays.

and yes, I agree with you that it's not over yet, but Djokovic is more likely to end 2012 as #1 than Fed, considering (as I mentioned already) the fact that he is defending something like only 660 points (fed needs to defend 3000). sure, anything is possible, even Murray mathematically can reach #1 if he wins everything and Nole and Fed fail miserably.

Djokovic played Toronto+MonteCarlo, and now Beijing, 3 tournaments with a lot of points, and for Monte-Carlo and especially for Toronto, not the field which Masters 1000 usually have, which Fed didn't play

Fed played Rotterdam+Halle, 2 tournaments which Djokovic didn't play. Doha was a practising tournament which will not count, Davis cup is just for his country.

Soon Djokovic will play Bercy, Fed will play Basel, and I'm convinced Murray will play Basel and not Bercy as well. Bercy will give 1000 points to the winner, Basel 500 points.

I have no problem to say that Djokovic is so far the year-leader and will probably be the one in the end of the year, but I just want to say the truth about the real difference in the number of tournaments played.

I know that Lenders has his dogma/theory about Toronto being "mandatory" then excluded from his vulturing theory but this Lenders' theory is PURE BULLSHIT : I'm not here to accept/enter his dogmas but to think of things the way they are in reality.

Thank you, I prefer to look at the correct numbers. The fact that Djokovic has more points from fewer tournaments is no excuse to claim the difference is bigger than it is.

Best performer of 2012 in terms of points accumulated but Federer is the best player in the world according to the computer rankings which go back 365 days.

The race ranking is not the world ranking.

well it will be, soon, to say the truth and if the question is "the best player of 2012", clearly it's the Race which has to be looked at.

But it's a pity that Fed will not be able to play Basel+Bercy+WTF like last year to get the same number of indoor poinnts as last year, because of that bloody stupid week which has been cancelled between Bercy and the WTF.

Basicly this If you wanna know who preformed best this year until now check the race points.

I thought we were on about who is currently the best player. Djoker will take it back in the next few tournaments but over last 12 months it's Fed.

I was pulling up Mattie who funnily enough used the last 12 months argument before USO cause Novak had 2 slams. Great goal post moving, Matt

Nojoke would trade all his masters titles this year for Olympic gold. The man really cares about winning for his country. No joke
