Never understand the importance of results occurring within a calendar year in tennis when it is pretty much a continually-going sport.

It's three times harder to win 4 slams in a row starting from the French Open as well. Yet we label the one starting from AO as somehow more valuable than one starting from any other slam.

If one player wins 4 GS in his career from 2013 AO - 2013 USO, and another player in an alternate history won 4 GS in his career from 2013 FO - 2014 AO, if all their other achievements were identical, it boggles my mind as to why some people would consider the first player a greater player than the second.

Re: Does Federer care about Sampras' last record?

Based on his demeanor and competitive spirit, I'd be surprised if Fed wasn't eyeing Sampras' 6 year-end #1's. Personally, I think Federer's most weeks at number one is a more significant record than years. Weeks denotes consistency while years may denote a lack of competition in Sampras' years at number one. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, Federer plays on more tennis surfaces throughout the year than Sampras did, making it even more apparent that Federer doesn't need that record to be considered the GOAT.

Sampras' record was consecutive, so unless Federer finds a time-machine he isn't getting that one. (probably already mentioned)

This.

And also I feel his last chance to get 6 (non-consecutive) y.e. #1 was last year when he was #1 in the race after the Olympics, too bad he went AWOL after that for the rest of the year (bar Cincy) probably because getting back to #1 took a lot out of him at 31.

29th january 2017: 18 slams!

The Maestro delivers his masterpiece: Roger Federer defeats Rafael Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3!

The King is back!

18 Grand Slam titles
7 Wimbledon titles
302 weeks at #1
