Well at least the tournament loses it's circus status now. Is Tsonga playing?

Gael is in a dark place right now. A poker addict and no ways of making income.

Not again. I really hope the journalists exaggerate.

Murray definitely paid the guy off out of fear. He saw his precious asian swing was in danger in the first round already

Re: Gael Monfils pulled out of Tokyo

It's a bad situation for Monfils. Ranking going to hell and meanwhile his body doesn't hold up. Gael knows he got to earn points. He's not eligable for protected ranking if he only takes minor breaks from playing.

If Monfils had been smart he would have called off the rest of the season some months back, healed up and reloaded for 2013 and then used protected ranking to get back.

They thought he could play again, now it's not that sure but wait and see, maybe journalists are too alarmist.

I had heard he wanted to be very careful before coming back and anyway I don't understand the difference if he had played challengers, he would have played quite as much anyway
you know that a trip Europe -> Asia is always tiring

moreover he claimed that he was already exhausted after Metz...better take a week off and not going to the other side of the world...personnally I don't feel sorry at all for him

Re: Gael Monfils pulled out of Tokyo

The journalist who talks about a surgery is usually a well-informed one, in the French sportsnewspaper "l'Equipe". It seems that there will be an article about it in the newspaper tomorrow, I guess following the medical exams.

Sorry Lalaland I don't remember what the exact diagnosis was . It's the right knee, that's all I remember, probably they talked about it in Monfils's forum

I know that a trip is tiring, but I don't think it may really affect the knee (I guess Monfils travels in "business class" ), I'd rather think it's playing which affects it most.

That's why I'd rather share your opinion that he might have avoided playing the week after (rather than playing challengers), but well he and his team and doctors know better than me

I think you're too harsh when you say you "don't feel sorry for him" whereas you don't know all the elements. But you're not the only one I've read saying that

Anyway, I think people should feel sorry for a guy who may be not very sensible but who is very enthusiastic. A surgery would be disastrous for him when he's in his prime years as it might keep him out of court for long.

Re: Gael Monfils pulled out of Tokyo

Monfils' coach said to L'Equipe: "Worst case scenario, Gaël played his last match last week in Bangkok"

Apparently they don't know if surgery would solve his problem.

The coach admits that Monfils' schedule was too heavy too soon.

Re: Gael Monfils pulled out of Tokyo

Apparently Monfils has a bipartite patella, the same condition Murray has.

It becomes career-threatening when the cartilage becomes damaged.

I'm no doctor but I'm guessing sliding around on hardcourts hasn't done him a lot of favours.

exactly, and it seems that they think it's damaged, and the surgery in that case is very complicated and hazardous (doctor Simon make ssome complications about it in the bottom text), that's why Chamagne says his carreer is in danger

Chamagne also says that they meet doctor Montalvan then a French knee specialist today, but they will take advice in several countries before deciding the following.

Goddamn it. It was sad enough with Ancic, and possibly Soderling. Now Gael as well? Fuck tennis

Gael Monfils in danger of early retirement

Monfils is considering a surgery due to chronic knee pains. It seems that if he has the surgery than the rest of his career is in very serious doubt. His coach said that if things go wrong, Gael might have played his last match.

Re: Gael Monfils in danger of early retirement

It's kind of weird that 2 tennis players at almost the same age have the exact same knee condition. I assumed it was quite rare.
