Re: The 'Big Four' All Won Their Maiden GS At A Different One!

In the 2's we have the following 1st time winners:

AO: Johansson (02) and Djokovic (08)
FO: Costa (02), Ferrero (03), Gaudio (04) and Nadal (05)
W: Ivanisevic (01) and Federer (03)
USO: Safin (00), Hewitt (01), Roddick (03), Del Potro (09) and Murray (12)

USO is the easiest place to debut, then. But not the place to do it if you want to be a legend - none of the players with their 1st win there has won more than two slams.

Something else I find interesting:

The French Open is almost exclusively won by players who won their first slam there. It the Open Era we have only four exceptions: Laver (69), Nastase (73), Agassi (99) and Federer (09).

What a list . The others are all pushers or unfortunate to add to their RG win.

The others are players who dominated clay.

All "big four" players win their first slam on their best surface. That's maybe because your best surface is the one where you're ready to play for title first.

That shows clay skills didn't use to be important outside clay. In this slow hard court era, I think we may see more other slams' champions winning RG.

nice insight...so 2012 is a condensed-history book in itself...

Q. Do you think you would have been able to play as well as you played today, or you think you would have pulled out from the game if it wasn't the Masters Cup final?

ROGER FEDERER: No, Roger Federer doesn't pull out. Otherwise he doesn't walk on court (smiling).

After losing to Nalbandian in 2005 TMC final...
