Best ever performances in straight sets losses?

Del Potro's display then was quite admirable. Fought hard, played some decent points but just could not break the iron man on the other side of the net.

So this has got me wondering: are there any other examples of a player beaten in STRAIGHT sets, who played very, very well?

Discuss.

Re: Best ever performances in straight sets losses?

Delpo played a horrible 1st set, so he only played great for 2 sets.

Roddick 2007 in Usopen comes to mind, Djokovic 2007 aswell really.

This one, Nole USO 2007 and maybe Duck in 2007 AO, that was quite sad IMO. Honorable mention to FO 2008 final.

Nadal in his 2006 Shanghai TMC loss to Federer (6-4 7-5) played extremely well.

Definitely not Delpo today. He fought very hard, but it wasn't a great performance.

A good example would be Nole in 2007 USO final.

Arguably Roddick was even better in his QF match against Federer.

What tournament was it when Federer beat Santoro in straights? That was a pretty damn good match.

Yes, Davydenko was playing out of his mind all the way to losing all sets. Incredible match, this one takes the cake.

Also, alot of matches against Nadal on clay where opponent ends up losing in straights. Like Nadal-Andujar 2011 and Nadal-Almagro 2010.

Wouldn't say either of them played great. Andujar did play well for about 4 games in the third to get to 5-1.

Potito Starace played very well against Nadal in Hamburg 2006 though. Very good display. Had a SP in set 2 also.

Re: Best ever performances in straight sets losses?

On a serious note, I'll say Djokovic vs Federer USO 2007 final. Already at 20 years old, Djoker was making weaknesses in Olderer's game very apparent. Olderer's experience barely cared him through in 3 very tight sets.

Both played the best match I have seen either deliver and couldnt take a set, the match from Starace was also great.

Berdych played incredible against Nadal in Rome (I think) and lost in 2 sets.
