Because he's young and 2 of the big four are likely to be gone while he's still playing.

Federer will retire in the next few years, and Nadals knees will catch up to him. Djokovic and Murray will be past their prime years while Del Potro is still in his prime years. There also doesn't seem to be any 90's players looking like they break will break through in the next couple of years

As shown in the olympics, when he defeated Djokovic and was 2 points away against Federer in his worst surface.

He is only 1 1/2 years younger than them and he turned pro the same year Murray did.

I'm not saying he won't ever win again though. He very well could, but the age thing won't be a factor.

I'd normally agree, but who else are going to win the slams? Only Djokovic is looking like a consistent contender. Nadal will continue to have injury problems and be prone to being defeated on hardcourts, Murray will always be prone to losing to an in-form player and Federer is old.

Prone to losing to an in-form player? You mean an in-form top 4 player? Because he made at least the semis in 7 of the last 8 slams. The other showing was a QF loss to Ferrer on clay, hardly a surprise. He is also more likely to beat the 'top 3' than any other player, including del Potro.

I'm not saying he's not. I'm merely stating that I do believe Murray will suffer losses to lower ranked players at some point. Nobody would've been talking about Murray's new found mental fortitude if he had been beaten by Cilic like he should've been (his comeback had little to do with his mental strength, considering Cilic hardly put a ball in court). And if it wasn't windy, I seriously doubt he'd have got by Berdych, never mind win the final.

My point is that I think there will be an opening at some point in time for Del Potro, Murray's no Federer who was always guaranteed to win slams.

Murray wins Wimbledon 2016 after Djokovic is blue shelled by Querrey. Thanks Querrey!

That's exactly it though. He refused to lose those matches. Djokovic, Federer and Nadal had quite a few matches like that throughout their careers as well. Besides we don't really know what effect his Grand Slam win had on him mentally. He could either go on a tear, or maybe slump a bit. Or maybe it didn't change anything at all. Which one will it be? I feel your statement is premature. As are statements about the Federer/Nadal era being over.

Re: Del Potro will never win a slam again.

If he stays healthy, it's inevitable that he will win more Slams. But it's a big if with JMDP.

If he keeps having all these injury problems, maybe he will maybe he won't. Even while struggling with injuries every other week, there are only like a handful of players who can stop him, so he'll always have a chance.

he 100% could win a slam on a hard court

No, there are not certainties in sport. There is no guarantee that he wins another slam even if healthy. But I agree that it's probably more likely than not.

I agree nothing is certain in sports, but I'd most certainly not bet against Del Potro win another Slam if healthy, he's too good not to. Even after enduring wrist surgery and picking up injuries every other week since his comeback, it takes the very best players in the world to kick him out of most big tournaments. If he can finally overcome his injury issues (I admit it's a big if considering his history) I'd definitely expect him to add to his Slam tally.

Even if he keeps being this injury prone, chances are he might win at least another one at some point with a draw opening up for him, because who has been stopping him? Only a handful of players really, two of them - Federer and Nadal - unlikely to be a factor at the very top for many more years (Federer because of age, Nadal because of his wear and tear will probably focus more on clay and not on the hardcourts).

Re: Del Potro will never win a slam again.

on a slow hard court murray/nole + maybe even federer is better

on a fast hard court very few players can beat peak potro

Well, he was handed the match against Cilic on a plate (all he had to do with be there and put some balls in court) and the match against Berdych was a write off due to the wind. Berdych nearly sneaked it into a 5th set despite being a murderous wind player.

Going on a tear or into a slump is irrelevant 3 years from now. I think Del Potro's going to have his chance whether it's within the next few years or even further into the future. There's no one coming through and despite things being predictable right now with the top 4 dominating, it's hardly going to be the case in another 4 years time.
