Youzhny's backhand

How is it unorthodox? I haven't seen him play much, but have heard about his backhand.

Re: Youzhny's backhand

He uses 1 hand to hit the backhand, that makes him a freak in the modern game.

Re: Youzhny's backhand

I know he uses 1 hand, but I remember commentators saying something like he releases his right hand quite late or something.

Re: Youzhny's backhand

he hits it like borgs backhand. a late release of the left hand.
it start off like a one hander, but the left hand stays on until impact and then is realeased.

Re: Youzhny's backhand

He is a freak of the modern game being a one-handed backhand Russian

The only other russian I know play one handed both sides is a female player ranked in the top 200 all the other male and female players have 2 handed backhands

Re: Youzhny's backhand

Also,

Youzhny hits very risky down-the-line shots (you could almost say go-for-broke winners) a small but noticeable proportion of the time using his one-handed backhand. I've seen him play a few times and always been surprised when he would attempt these screaming, very flattened-out one-handers down the line, even if his opponent was not really out of position. It seems like desperation at times, and the tactic can become erratic if he's in a hitting slump, but of course these shots can also turn out great.

Sort of like Guga on clay in earlier years, but with less control and precision IMO.

Re: Youzhny's backhand

he uses his other hand to guide the other hand without making it a two-handed backhand...
hands down to him hehehe!
